Canada has come into the front rank as one of the great metal pro- ducing countries.of the world, but the world in general does not know it.- That is because the Canadian government does not take pains to tell the world of it. The director of the mint of the United States pub- lishes an annual report giving. the production of the precious metals by. States, and also telling what other countries have produced. He also. publishes other reports and es- timates from time to time, which keep the importance of the United States as a mining country con- stantly before the eyes of the world. Canada should do likewise.. It should be made the business of some one of the officials at Ottawa to collect such statistics and pub- lish them from time to time, - giving the: production of gold, silver, cop- per, lead, &c., by provinces and territories. Itis such information as this—the tangible results of min- ing—which draw the attention of investors to a mining country and put to silence the croakers who, through badly chosen: investments, or good investments badly manag- ed, or through habitual pessimism, declare this, that or the other dis- trict ‘‘no good.” ° The figures of production published by the Johan- nesburg chamber of mires have kept British money ‘pouring into the Rand. The spectacle of over 60 men, who had gone north poor, walking down the gang-plank of a steamer loaded with bags of gold, has drawn 100,000 people to North- west Territory and Alaska in three years and has started a movement which still continues. Canada can make a. splendid showing, but she does not profit by it, simply because she makes no ef- fort to display her wealth. A Chi- nese merchant keeps his finest goods hidden away on his shelves; a white merchant displays them in his windows. Canadais like the Chinese merchant. . British Columbia, it is true, pub. lishes an admirable annual report from its minister of mines, but does not get the full benefit of it in an advertising sense. , The United States director of the mint does not wait till his entire report is printed whole 1 is pl the heavens will fall. “The result is that CLASSIFIED. their news reaches the pap months old, buried in a mass of dry detail, from which — the newspaper editor, with whom every minute counts, has no time to ex- hume it. ‘If the official would burst the bonds of red tape, and put the news on the wires while itis hot and fresh, it would be printed the world over. : This should serve asa hint to the British C i ini of Advertisements under this head inserted al the tate of One Cent 6” Word. “Nothing taken Jor Teas than a5 cents, Six insertions, $1.00. EDITORIAL NOTES. Now that the ore cars go rattling down the Le Roi tramway, the town seems awake again. It was a blessing to Ryder, any- way. If Martin had not given him a job, he might have been caught in the rush from Seattle to Cape Nome and there have ‘gotten cold feet. The people of the Danish West Indies do not relish the prospect of being sold to the United States any more than Norway enjoyed being annexed to Sweden by the treaty of Vienna. Diplomats seem still to forget in carving up territory, that the people ‘have some preferences in these matters. A few little scrimmages like that Vancouver convention’ will put British Co!umbia in the same cate- gory as Kentucky. Jim Martin has been looking for the Rossland contingent of the Cot- ton party ever since his return from Victoria, and his eyes begin, to ache. So far, Cotto has his platform all to himself.
