July "26, ‘ 1979 - Record . ‘Tracks | by George Gammon Wings - Back To The EGG » Paul McCartney's. back, with a little help from his friends, the Rockestra, Wings latest release sees the addition of two new. mem: bers, Steve Holly on drums, and Laurence Juber on gui- tar. Their infiltration into the band does not signify any radical change to McCart- ney’s commercially success: ful, format, but McCartney himself seems to be headed away from the muzak that has marred his writing, par- ticularly with his last ven- ture, London Town. . It appears that maybe the Rockestra provided some initiative and Paul wanted to look good in front of his mates. Rockestra consists of a group of friends McCartney called together for a couple of cuts on the album. In addition to the regular Wings line-up there is Dave Gilmour (form. er Pink Floyd guitarist) and Pete Townshend on guitars, John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) on drums, John Paul Jones (Zeppelin) and Ronnie Lane (Faces) on bass and when mixed with a horn section, stirred up and thrown to- gether it has the same affect as a Chinese dinner. You're always hungry for more. Although the two Rock- estra cuts are the highlight of the disc, McCartney's first since switching to CBS rec- ords, the supporting cuts round out the album nicely. Arrow Through Me is an interesting ballad spiced up by a fine horn arrangement, - and Baby's Request is one of McCartney's regular ven- tures to tin-pan alley in the sume vein as Your Mother Should Know, and When I'm Sixty-Four. Apparently a film was made of the Rockestra per- forinances. If there's a film, why not an album? Problem is, who gets top billing. se 8 Mick Taylor - Mick Taylor { Mick Taylor's first no- ticeable appearance on the rock scene was with John- Mayall when he was a mere 19 years old. Sometime later he joined the Rolling Stones, leaving the band after their 1974 It’s Only Rock'n'Roll LP. What he's been’ up to since that time is anybody's guess. Taylor composed all the songs on the album, with lyrics for Alabama ‘contribu- ted by Colin Allens Why he had Allen pen the words to that song is a mystery. One cringes with the overused geographical pairing in the line I'm ‘halfway through Louisianna, on my way home to Alabama. Taylor is assisted on the album by the late Lowell George, formerly of Little Feat, but there seems to be nothing that can be done with music that is mediocre’ at best. Taylor has been touted asa fine guitarist, but as a writer he is very limited. Just three weeks ago, and every- one was talking about it. It's interesting, isn't it, how we can be highly inter- ested in something one week, and forget it thé next. It makes you realize the power of the media to focus our attention on what they, the media, decide to whip ‘up our interest in. It's a challenge, these days, to think for yourself, instead of allowing editors or television advertisers to tell ‘us what we should be think- ing about. Anyway, Skylab. I'd like to add my two bits’ worth before we've forgotten it altogether, or some clever advertiser uses the name for a new hair conditioner, and I'd have to use two more sentences to remind you what he, original Skylab really ‘Tm mglad the thing didn't hit anyone when it came. down. It could have. ‘ I think that if scientists had brains enough to put the thing up there, they should have been able to bring it down safely, or send it out’ toward the sun, or blow it up. . Apparently they did con- sider putting a self-destruct package on Skylab, but thought it might be danger- ous for astronauts to ride ‘around on a space station ‘containing a live bomb. Not that they were planning all along to let the thing drop. You see, they thought it .would stay up longer, but sun. activity ex- panded the earth's. atmos- phere and put drag on the craft, bringing it down soon- Got all that? Probably, the scientists were in too much of a rush to get the thing up there, and they thought'a little less than they should have about the future consequences of what ‘they were so busy doing. + The same as scientists and bureaucrats always seem in too much‘of a rush these days to spray insecticides, or divert rivers, or mine uran- jum and think less than they should-about the future con- sequences of what they're so busy doing. But before. we’ start feeling superior to such sci- entists, let’ me raise this question, Which of us has never rushed into something with great enthusiasm, only ‘to have realized later that we should have given more thought to future consequen- ces? ‘ ‘ The remains of Skylab fre not the first time the. results of a hasty decision have threatened to come back and hurt us. So, the next time you are about to make-'a decision, remember Skylab, and ask yourself, at least one more time, if you really know ‘what you're doing. I wouldn't want to see you get hurt.
