The new fire chief, Donald Guthrie, arrived last night, and was met at the train by Alderman Lalonde and Acting Chief Colling. He was escorted to the fire hall, where he was welcomed by the department. He replied by saying that he was glad to know he was to be asso- cieted with eo intelligent and efficient men, and realized that the success of the department depended more upon hia able support than upon himeelf. He expressed surprise at the meager supply of apparatus and theamall number of men in the department and said he hoped that these defects would be reme- died. He was astonished that there was but one team of horses and insisted that it took mien, horses.and a good appara- tus to combat the fiery element. Protest ToBe Withdrawn.
