Treatment for prostate cancer is quite varied and the doctor dis- cussed the different stages of this disease and explained the roles of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and hormonal treatments. The decision as to which type of treatment, or combinations is usually made after consultation with docters at the Cancer Con- trol Agency in Vancouver. Dr. McIlwaine feels the use of the Prostate Specific Antigen (P.S.A.) has not proved to be reli ible in widespread screening for prostate cancer and does not jus- tify its cost. However, it can be useful when used with other diagnostic techniques. The Canadian Cancer Society is taking a leadership role in shaping a broad agenda for action on prostate cancer. In cooperation with the National Cancer Institute of Canada, the society will be hosting a national forum on prostate cancer to bring together all interested parties in address- ing the prostate cancer puzzle. April is fundraising time for the Canadian Cancer Society. All can- vassers will have identification.
