I watched the Warriors open their 1987-88 season in the arena Monday and from the outset you could tell the guys were going to play for keeps. Lots of hitting, some of it good stuff and some of it not so good. I didn't think the officiating was that good. I guess in these early season games every team tries to impress everyone with what they've got and it makes the job of the refs quite a tough one. As I said before everyone was trying to impress with what they have and tend to go overboard. If they are allowed to get away with it this early in the season, that just makes the officials job that much tougher as the season goes on. Let's hope they come down to earth before we go much further because if it doesn't, we are in for a pretty rugged time. Both teams showed some good moves, but the overall picture was indistict. There were good moves but they were mostly smothered by a lot of hitting and clutching and grabbing, which spoiled a lot of good play. But, as the man said, " It's early in the season and everyone wants to prove how tough they are." It's too early in the season to tell who is good out there but there were guys on both teams who showed definite possibilities. Only time will tell how these individuals will turn out during the regular schedule. Meanwhile, Tuesday, we of the Retirees held our annual wimlup at the upper course. I hear that Dave and Bill will be leaving the job tomorrow. Although, we of the Retirees curling club have not had any official word of us taking over until Thanksgiving Day - which is scheduled to be the official closing date at the course - I'm told it is expected that we shall be asked to take over as of Saturday. As of right now I can't say we have enough bodies to handle the job. Anyway, we've done it before and I would guess we can handle it again but I believe everyone would liked to have had some advance notice. As I write this we have had 53 sign up today. I hoped there might be more. However, this is water under the bridge and we shall get nowhere wondering why. Let's say those we had were very happy with what went on throughout the season. Next year we shall all be back again for another year which we hope will be as good as this was. In an abbreviated list of winners today the lucky ones were, low gross went to Joe Bielli with . 42, in lownet we handed out four balls to Lou Freeman for his 35, Carl Seefeldt, John lrcandia and Bart Dudley were next in line, Carl and John with 36s and Bart a 37. Long putt on no. 9 went to Russ Broughton for the second week in a row and no one claimed the closest to the pin on no. 5. This season our club played 22 sessions at the upper course and we attracted 1237 participants. One of our members has shown his appreciation in a novel way, Bill Orenchuk has offered his services on the desk at any of our sessions for next season. Thanks Bill! We have a little work to do on the phone before we decide if we shall run the course on behaH of the Rossland Retirees Curling Club. This should not take too long. And now I'll say, 'Til next time, then !
