Gaetz is the knight-in-shining-
armor that McGougan says is
so desperately needed in this
community.

A longtime resident of the West
Coast, Gaetz made the jump to
Castlegar after hearing of the need
she could readily fulfil. Her skills,
said McGougan, will allow the
New Life Counselling services to
help more people in more ways.

Although the counselling ser-
vices fall under the auspices of
the church board, McGougan
maintains that New Life Assem-
bly is in no way funding the
counselling services—simply
providing the space for coun-
selling and referrals.

Gaetz’s salary will come
directly from her client's abilities
to pay her—though no oné will
be tumed away because of inabil-
ity to meet finances.

“[The client's] contributions to
solving their own problems is the
first step in owning it,” said
Gaetz. “But no one will be turned
away for an inability to pay.”

The counselling services will
cover virtually every realm: from
addictions and abuse to family
and marital counselling. The
church is now successfully run-
ning two support groups: one for
victims of violence and the other
for adult children of alcoholics.
