Liberal party.

“There are some Liberals out there who feel it is a
new ball game, and a new party,” said McEwan.

“I think there’ lot of excitement in campaigning,
and a lot of people are attracted to it for that reason,” he

McEwan said incidents like that can give voters the
“idea that you're not an organized team.”

“People do pick up quickly on the perception you're
losing opportunities, or that you have missed something,”
he said.

McEwan may be sensitive to the criticism of disor-
ganization. Turner's federal election campaign has
recently come under attack for supposedly being poorly
run.

And McEwan says because Kootenay West Liberals
were the last to choose their candidate — in July months
after Kristiansen and Brisco had offi
names forward — critics have charged “it's
indication of disorganization.”

The game plan for Brisco’s campaign is, not sur.
prisingly, similar to that of Turnbull and Kristiansen —
avoid large meetings for the most part, and concentrate
on door-to-door canvassing as much as possible.

“Without a doubt, the best election method, if you
can possibly do it, is the door-to-door on a one-to-one
situation,” said Chernoff.

But he adds, with roughly 40,000 voters in the West
Kootenay “you would have to start a year in advance” to
have a candidate meet them all.

core organizers in Castlegar, Trail and Nelson, and

“There is a perception when you nominate a person

The Liberals are, however, keeping up with their
five-week election schedule, says McEwan.

“By election day, we will have a presence that is
competitive with the other two candidates.”

Commenting on the campaigns of the other can
didates, McEwan said they appear to be run on an
“opposition mentality” of “childish one-up-manship.”

“Asa matter of technique, it does seem the other two
parties are running the campaign on, ‘Hey, I'm the one
who can bring the biggest tray from the government
delicatessen.

“You worry about it because it might impress the
voters,” said McEwan.

bound by a budget based on the number of voters

The thrust of the Conservative campaign behind
Briseo is similar in some ways to that of Kristiansen's
campaign. Both campaign managers say they are looking
for votes based on their candidate’s past record as an MP
and his commitment to gaining a fair share‘of government
aid programs for Kootenay West.

But the Conservatives have added a twist that the
NDP can't use.

“By electing an NDP candidate, our share of the
goodies from the federal government won't be received
unless we have a candidate serving under the party in
power,” says Chernoff, pointing out that Brian Mul
roney’s chances of becoming prime minister eclipse those
of Ed Broadbent's.

Chernoff added that Brisco is interested in obtaining
government programs that will create employment for
the area “on a permanent basis” rather than “little bits
and pieces of grants.”

WATER NO PROBLEM
FRASER LAKE (CP) — Water‘samples taken from
the Stellako River following a spill of sodium cyanide
pellets have shown there is no problem with the water,
community clerk Angus Davis ssid Friday night.

Davis said the results of the tests were favorable,
and the pumps feeding the Fraser Lake reservoir had
been turned on. The pumps were shut off Thursday after
sodium cyanide pellets spilled into the river when the
drums they were in fell off the back of a flatbed truck.
The pellets can give off poisonous hydrogen cyanide
gas when they come in contact with water.
There were no injuries in the accident, about 140
kilometres west of Prince George.
COAL MINE OPENED
TUMBLER RIDGE (CP) — Premier Bill Bennett
moved a million tonnes of rock at Quintette Coal Ltd.'s
northeast B.C. coal mine Friday.
The mine, operating since December, was officially
opened as Bennett pushed the plunger which dynamited
the overburden.
More than 300 guests from 10 countries attended the
ceremony.
The Quintette coal-pit mine is the largest in Canada
with an annual production of 6.3 million tonnes of coal,
which is shipped to Japan.
TAX FIRM FINED
EDMONTON (CP) — Block Associates Income Tax
Service Ltd. was fined $1,000 in provincial court for
failing to file a tax return.
Crown prosecutor Irving Yaverbaum said he
imagined “it's somewhat embarrassing” for a business
engaged in completing tax returns for others to be in
court for failing to file its own.
Defence counsel John Thomson attributed the
problem to a busy tax season and the fact the business's
head office, which prepares the returns, is in Salt Lake
City, Utah
GAYNOR HOSPITALIZED
PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. (AP) — Janet Gaynor, 77,
who won the first Academy Award for best actress in
1929, was in stable conditién Saturday at a hospital here
with an undisclosed ailment, a nursing supervisor said.
Gaynor was admitted to hospital early last week
under her married name, Janet Gregory, nursing super
visor Sandy Sizelove said. The actress, who retired in

until he announced in February he was stepping down,
Liberal support rose nine percentage points in the polls and
the Tory lead was narrowed to 12 points from 29.

Campagnolo was the first to put the pressure on Turner
this week by calling on Canada to support a mutual and
verifiable freeze on the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Coutts joined the fray Friday in a letter to the Toronto
Star, noting the freeze has been endorsed by some Western
European nations as well as the Democratic party in the
United States.

Current government policy, following the U.S. line,
states that a freeze now would perpetuate the edge it now
believes is held by the Soviet Union and would reduce the
incentive to negotiate arms reductions.

Chretien's position became known Thursday when the
Canadian Council for International Co-operation belatedly
released his response to a questionnaire on defence issues
during the Liberal leadership contest.

In it, Chretien — speaking through an aide — said he
wants all nations to renounce the first use of nuclear
weapons. However, he cautioned Friday that that is only his
personal opinion and he hasn't discussed it with Turner.

Current NATO policy reserves the right to use tactical
battlefield nuclear weapons to counter an invasion of
Western Europe by the numerically superior conventional
forces of the Warsaw Pact.

MORDEN, MAN. (CP) — A United Church minister
who is a declared homosexual suggested Friday the church
has some distance to go before it fully accepts the principle
that active gay people have a right to ordination

Eilert Frerichs, a chaplain at University of Toronto,
said he was encouraged by statements adopted by the
church's general assembly that indicted salvation does not
depend on whether a person is straight or gay

The church's governing body, after considerable debate,
voted to accept a declaration that ‘all believers in Christ are
accepted as full mmembers of the Christian church, regard
less of their sexual orientation.”

The 370 delegates, attending the church's 30th general
assembly in this southern Manitoba town, also voted to
accept a statement that all human beings — whatever their
sexual leanings — are made in the image of God.

Frerichs said later the positions give a good basis for
work — the church is scheduled to come squarely to grips on
Mnday with whether active homosexuals have a right to
become ministers but they don’t go far enough

“A major obstacle still remains in people's minds:
separating orientation and behavior,” he said.

Frerich’s took part in a discussion session with a fellow
homosexual, Brian Burke of Vancouver, and two lesbians
who live together in Vancouver, Robin Rennie and Christine
Waymark. The four met about 60 church members during
lunch time in a tent, next door to a recreation centre where
the assembly has been holding its general sessions.

CITES GUILT PROBLEMS

Frerichs, a slim 44-year-old who has a teenaged son,
said he has been able to come to terms with his own
sexuality but the process is difficult.

“Most lesbians and gays go through tremendous guilt
because of the atractions we feel for members of our own
sex,” he said.

"I have a very powerful sense that this is who God made
me and that I am accepted by God.”

In an interview, Frerichs said, “Asa gay man, one thing
one is always accused of is lusting after jittle boys. One just
doesn't do that.”

Burke, a stocky man in his early 20s who hopes to
become a school teacher, said he was heartened when Lois
Wilson, a former church moderator, went to speak to a
group of gays and lesbians in Vancouver.

He said Wilson told the group not to despair of the
church and that gave him hope.
