CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, October 28, 1976 « Pulpit oe Pew'}}, By Pastor Donald W. Reed 2 Usually, like so many events in ; life, it sneaks up ; on me. -Every year I determine . that I won't let it oF < happen again, but 5 it usually does. Not this year! You see, one thing about writing a weekly column is that it teaches you to daticipate. That's why I check- éd with a very reliable source dnd was informed that Daylight javing ends at midnight this Seturday. 5 Thisis the weekend we put our clocks back an hour. It's like getting an extra hour free, ‘Trouble is, the crunch comes in the spring when we have to give that hour back. H The fact is of course that we can't really change time. We ean do anything we like with opr clocks but we're not chang- ing’time. We simply don't have the means to manipulate -tho’ movements of the sun.. 1 Take’ it a step further— itfs equally true that we can do very little to regulate our span of life. The Qld Testament Preacher put it this way, “There is an appointed time for everything and there is a time for every event under the sun— a time to give birth, and a time to die...” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 2) Moat of us live like we had all the time in the world, We think in terms of hours or days, not minutes or years. We fail to realize that minutes and sec- onds are in fact slivers of life. We keep using up chunks of time as though life was merely a ramdom walk with no ulti- mate destination. Forgive my phitosophizing but perhaps this is as good a time as any to ask, “What am I doing with my time?” One thing is sure—there really aren't any extra hours, The poet said it well: Time WAS—is past—thou canst not it recall; * Timo 13—thou hast—cm- ploy the portion small; Time AC city nol— may not ever be; Time PRESENT—Is the only time for thee, Time is God’s—He gave ‘it to us for a purpose. Time is a sacred trust—we must answer for every minute. Time is preparation for eternity—we have no right to throw it away. Well, anyway—Daylight Saving ends this Saturday. That means that Oct, 30 has 25 hours, Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour, and just to make all the preachers in Castlegar happy, why not transfer thal extra hour: to Sunday and spend it in church. It might do you good, . Have a good Sunday! A Way to Lose Weight And Retain Ayoid pills, diets and star- vation—and lose all the weight you want, ‘That's the technique at the 50th Birthday in Print For Winnie-the-Pooh Winnie-the-Pooh, the bear of very little brain, has cele- brated his 60th anniversary in print. For Christopher Robin, the young boy in A, A. Milne's children's books about Pooh Bear and his animal friends, the. event was something of an em- barrassment. Christopher Robin Milne, the son of the author, was six years old when Winnie-the- Pooh was published. Today he is a 56-year-old bookseller who has spent much of his life trying to dodge the legacy left him by his father. *. After years of ignoring re- porters and refusing interviews he decided to use the occasion. of Pooh’s 50th anniversary to publicize a new edition of his autobiographical version of the. childhood life of Christopher Robin. “Anyway, Pooh is 55, no 80," he says referring to the toy teddy bear his father bought him, which became the model for the books. The stuffed bear now sits in a glass case in the New York offices of Dutton, Mile’s U.S. publishers. * The stories about Christo- pher Robin and his animal friends, Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga and Roo have proved a lasting success for the publishers. The British publishers in London have produced a variety of spin-offs from the original four stories, ranging University of Pennsylvania Hospital, where overweight patients are losing hundreds of pounds. ‘They're not only taking off weight; ‘more ° important, they're keeping it off. “The secret is knowing how, where and why you eat,” said Dr. Henry Jordan, director of the weight loss program. Dr. Jordan, associate pro-_ fessor of psychiatry, told of a 300-pound woman who lost 100 pounds in a year by eating less ice cream. “She had to decide never to have ice cream in her house,” Dr. Jordan said. “But ‘she could have it outside, So she's become ‘ex- = ‘tremely finicky about her ice “Winnie-the-Pooh He Loved Honey ‘The books have been trans- lated into more than 20 lan- “guages, including Latin, Espe- ranto and Serbo-Croat, and their hero is a popular figure in the Soviet Union, where he is known as Vinni Pukh. In Poland, the greedy. bear has achieved iromor allt in a street nai “The attraction is that they are well written,” Christopher Robin Milne said. “They were written to be read aloud, forming a bond between parent from Pooh, cookbooks to Pooh calendars, and they still sell half_a million editions a year. and child which the child remembers and repeats to his children." cream. “She goes out to find the best ice-cream and she gets more enjoyment from’ less ice cream eaten less often. “People gain tons of excess weight because of poor eating habits,” Dr. Jordan said. “They eat the wrong food for the wrong reasons at the wrong times and places.” Here are some of the simple guidelines which yield dramatic weight losses in the university hospital's 20-week, | $500 program: e Eat when you're hungry —but only then. * @ Avoid fast food. opera- « tions. You'll consume too many » calories too quickly. * e If you know you -con- sume a particular fat-producing food compulsively, keep it at a distance ‘as the 300-pound ice. cream addict learned to do. © Don't try to do all your dieting at once. Change- your eating habits gradually. But change them, ‘These and other rules have helped 65 per cent of those in Dr. Jordan's program to lose 20 pounds in the 20 weeks and 15 per cent to lose at least 40 pounds. | church | directory -._$T, RITA'S CATHOLIC CNURCH ST, PETER.
