Stanley Humphries secondary
school's Class of 1960
recently held its 30-year
reunion with returning grads
from as far away as Atlanta,
Ga. Reminiscing and
renewing friendships were
followed by dancing to music
from the 1960s. The 1960
grads also toured Zuckerberg
Island and the Castlegar Rail
Station. A family picnic and
gomes at Birchbank topped
the two-day event.

Lecture on work of women set

The invisible work that women
have traditionally done to keep their
homes and families together is the
basis on which a whole new economy
is being built in the Nelson area, ac-
cording to Suzanne Mackenzie, who
has been doing research in the Koot-
enays since 1985.

She will be speaking July 13 in
Nelson as part of a lecture series
by the West Kootenay

economy is still left,” Mackenzie says
in a news release. ‘‘And a lot of that is
the invisible work that women have
always done to keep their homes and
communities going. People start
paying more attention to it when
men's well-paying, full-time, life-long
jobs disappear.

Mackenzie said that the change in
the economy is not just a switch from
an industrial base to a small business

base.

“It’s a fundamental difference in
the way people think of the economy,
what work is and what making a
living is. Even the kind of people who
chose to live here starts to change."”
