Among the missing are Canadians who have moved here from other ‘7 pe - people who have reached voting age since the May 1989 enumeration and People who have moved out of the constituency in which they were enumerated, the opposition party says. The NDP fears that as many as 300,000 may still be off the voters’ registration list on election day. The Social Credit government must call an election by this fall. “The (1989) enumeration is ob- solete,’”’ NDP legislature member Dale Lovick said. “‘We guesstimate that as many as half a million people are not curren- tly registered. And we believe it’s quite conceivable that as many as 300,000 people will be disfranchised on voting day.”” Chief electoral officer Bob Patter- son said he’s doing everything he can to ensure that eligible voters are registered. Patterson believes that only 250,000 eligible British Columbians aren’t on the list. “It’s extremely difficult to know exactly how many new voters there are since 1989,’’ Patterson said from Victoria. ‘‘We expect we'll probably be around two million voters when the election is held, and we're now at about 1,750,000."’ B.C. Statistics analyst Don Mc- Crae estimated that since May 1989, British Columbia has become home to another 113,000 people who have turned 19, moved from other parts of Canada or become citizens. That does not include those who have moved within the province. Patterson said his office held a voter registration drive last fall and Plans another next month in shop- ping malls and community centres. After the election is called, Elec- tions B.C. will open between 600 and 650 other registration centres. The NDP opposed 1988 amen- dments to the Elections Act that did away with voting-day registration. “We have argued for a long time that it is to the government’s advan- tage to not have those people registered,” Lovick said. “The poor and transient are a constituency that the government does not rely on for its support. Those people have to be encouraged and almost dragged to vote because they have given up on the system ana right-wing parties don’t do much to encourage them.”* On voting day in October 1986, 157,000 voters registered and cast ballots — more than double the number who registered on voting day in 1983. Patterson said the rationale for getting rid of voting-day registration was that it caused ‘‘extremely long lineups at the polling stations, long delays, confusion, congestion and some errors that as a result disfran- chised some people.’” Province of iw Government of Canada Forestry Canada Ministry of British Columbia Forests Gouvernement du Canada Forets Canada NOTICE OF FEDERAL/PROVINCIAL CONTRACT PROJECT(S) TO BE FINANCED BY THE GOVERNM' ENT OF CANADA-FORESTRY CANADA AND THE BRITISH COLUMBIA MINISTRY OF FORESTS UNDER THE FOREST RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT (FRDA) NOTICE OF VIEWING FOR STAND TENDING CONTRACTS KOOTENAY LAKE FOREST DiSTRICT CONTRACT ST91NO7027 LOCATION: Crawford Creek TYPE: Herbaceous Brushing CONTRACT ST91NO7024 LOCATION: 40.0 ha. more or less : Crawford Creek — 38.0 ha. more or less ng TYPE: Juvenile Spaci CONTRACT ST91NO7023 LOCATION: Akokli Creek TYPE: Juvenile Spacing TENTATIVE CONTRACT ST91NO7019 37.0 ha. more or less LOCATION: Crawford Creek — 30.0 ha. more or less TYPE: Brushing and Weeding Viewing of the sites prior to submitti @ tender is MANDATORY.
