Blank, 69, had nearly given
up ever selling the public on
his idea, which he developed
in California while working
as a welder before the Sec
ond World War.

The original model was
made of stainless steel wire
and looked more like a bottle
opener than an orange peel
er. Blank was turned down
for a patent. For four dec-
ades, he tried in vain to sell
the device.

About eight years ago, he
showed his peeler to Fred
Wadley at the I.V. Die Co. in
Peoria. Wadley made one
from bright orange plastic
and has since produced about
30,000 peelers. But he said
sales must soar before the
product can be declared a
winner.
