A2 Castlegar News November 21, 1990 LOCAL NEWS Trustees continued from front page Incumbent Gordop Turner, the current board chairman who topped the polls, said he interprets the vote count as an indication “‘people are pleased with what I'm doing on the board."" But he noted he also campaigned hard to regain his seat Other board chairmen across the province went down to defeat this year, he pointed out. Re-electing Castlegar’s chairman must indicate the electorate likes what the board has been doing, Turner said. FOR THE RECORD The Nelson and District Women’s Centre sent a representative to last Friday’s debate at Selkirk College, not Community Services as stated in the front-page story. As well, the representatives speaking for women’s issues at the debate had not. been confirmed before the Castlegar News went to press Friday. Sam Simpson, coor- dinator of the Nelson and District Women’s Centre, and Eleanor Har- per, a volunteer with the Women in, Need Society in Trail, were the representatives. TonyGuglietmi said he too sees his re-election af a “‘very strong vote of confidence” despite not having time for a great deal of campaigning. Guglielmi said he will work hard over the next three years “‘not to let them down.”” Incumbent Mickey Kinakin, who ran for the seat representing Area I for the first time this year after sit- ting on the board as a city represen- tative for three years, said he at- tributes his win to being well-known in the rural areas where he lives. Besides his work .on the school | board, he has spoken out on a num- ber of issues including the plan, several years ago by CP Rail to spray pesticide on weeds growing along the company’s rail lines in the West Kootenay. Kinakin said he plans to become more acquainted with the area he now represents and its specific issues. Nina Koodrin, who lost to Kinakin by a four-to-one margin, said she is disappointed over her loss but she will continue her involvement with the schools. Voykin said he will “‘work harder to respond to people’s needs’ during the next three years. Semenoff said an area represen- tative should be mostly concerned with the issues that his constituents are affected by right now. He said he may run again in three years but until then he will take the initiative in dealing with several local matters he feels should be addressed. Semenoff, who lost to Voykin by a vote of 385 to 162, said the election “‘turned out pretty good’’ for his fir- st try at politics. He said he will ‘‘see what the feeling is’ in three years and probably run again. INSURANC 0 Cut in unsafely. ORPORATION Have you ever done any of the following? The decision was made by the school board Monday after private discussions-on-how to keep Castlegar trustees from getting too far behind COLUMBIA We're working to reduce the number of accidents through traffic safety education. And by promoting the use of safety belts. ICBC also works with school children and educators, the police, safety councils and govern- ments on continuing “grass roots” traffic safety programs. At ICBC, we're doing what we can. But the real solution lies with the individual motorist. their provincial counterparts while keeping any increases low, board chairman Gordon Turner told the Castlegar News. Trustees decided to tie their remuneration to the CPI, thereby ad- justing the indemnities automatically by a small amount each year, Turner said. Currently, Castlegar trustees receive $5,000 per year. The board’s vice chairman receives $6,250 and the chairman receives $7,500. Last year, Castlegar trustees chose to keep indemnities as those figures, which until last year were regulated by the provincial government, while other boards around B.C. voted to increase stipends by varying amoun- ts. Victoria removed the regulations on indemnities when the new School Act was introduced. IN MEMORY Lee Croteau Woodland Dr. in Castlegar. Home. even a lucky one.
