Acquired through funding Provided by the Ministry of Advan- ced Education, the machine consists of a page scanner, computer sof- tware and speaker. The total package cost a little more than $9,000, in- cluding the computer used to operate the reader peripherals. The Kurzweil reading machine reads the same way people do — by reading characters on a page, grouping the characters into words and pronouncing each word Phonetically. The reader does mispronounce words, but this can easily be compensated for by con- sidering the context in which the word is used. “*Selkirk College is pleased to join many other colleges in the province that have acquired a Kurzweil , learning disabled, illiterate or men ally handicapped people at- tending the college who could benefit from this technology.”’ Metge said she believes the machine to be the first such learning aid available“in the Selkirk College region. For now, the reader occupies a desk in a quiet corner of the Castlegar campus library. A demon- stration of the technology by library clerk Kate Enewold proved the equipment is fairly simple to operate and the reading voice sounds remarkably human. One attribute of the machine that takes a little getting used to is the vocalization of punctuation within a written page. What seems Strange about the reading voice of the machine is that it considers pun- ctuation just another word in the text, so instead of pausing at a com- ma or at the end of a sentence, the reader simply says, ‘‘comma’’ or “‘point”’ and carries on with the text. Users can, however, alter the Program to eliminate this feature. According to Enewold, the sof- tware allows adjustments to the tone of the reader’s vocal qualities, and the software program must be cued to the nature of the printed document. The reader has the capability to distinguish single or multiple columns of typewritten or typeset text. The machine cannot read pictures Or graphs, but it can be used as a talking Calculator, capable of per: forming trigometric, logarithmic and exponential functions as well as or- dinary arithmetic computations. The KRM can be interfaced with a Paperless braille printer, and the document being read is displayed on the computer monitor as scanned by the reader. The displayed infor- mation can be saved to a computer disk, or converted to hard copy. Studies have shown the Kurzweil reader is much more than’ a’ simple tool used to read printed text to the blind. As a learning aid for the visually impaired, illiterate or men- tally handicapped, dramatic increases in reading comprehension, retention and reading speed were registered by a test group of learning disabled students who were given regular ac- cess to the KRM for a 20-week Period. Currently, Selkirk College Library staff-are receiving training on-the-ase of the Kurzweil reader so they will be able to assist faculty and students in hine helps fight illiteracy the use of the machine. Additional training sessions are scheduled for faculty and students, Literacy Group training volunteers are scheduled to receive instruction on the use of the machine March 18 at 7 p.m. The public is invited to a preview and demonstration of the Kurzweil reading machine from $ p.m. to 7 p-m:-March.48 at the Castlegar cam- pus faculty lounge to allow universal access to this new technology.
