northeastern Alberta where 300
bucking horses are farmed. Part
of Bruce’s job is to supply the
Stampede and other rodeos with
the ranch’s best animals,

“We keep a record of perfor-
mance on every horse we have,
plus a record of production on
the mares and stallions,” he
said.

“We mate the mares with the
best performance records with
the sires with the best perfor-
mance records. When that foal
matures, we look at its perfor-
mance record against its moth-
er’s and father’s.

A good bucking horse can sell
for $50,000. Many horses at the

“deleted from his contract.

Strangely, there’s no specific
mention in hockey contracts
about skiing.

“Several members of the
Edmonton Oilers and the Cal-
gary Flames who live in proxim-
ity to the Canadian Rockies
have been known to ski during

the season,” Gretzky’s agent,
Mike Barnett, confesses, adding,
“Some with the knowledge of the
club, some without.

“It all depends. If you get
hurt, then it’s probably a rea-
sonable risk. If you get down the
mountain safely, it’s no prob-
lem.”

In some cases, there are ways
to get around the prohibitions.
Clark’s guarantee could be end-
ed by a hunting accident, so he
took out His own insurance
against a hunting injury.
