For nine weeks key staff members have been putting in 12- and 16-hour days gearing up for the changes you see in today’s Castlegar News, and for introduction on Tuestay of the Mid-Week Mirror. (The Mid-Week Mirror is the Total Market Coverage Vehicle of the Castlegar News. Published weekly on Tuesdays in full-page format, The Mirror v.1., be distributed to households in surrounding retail trading zones. (In combination with the Castlegar News, this will provide virtually unduplicated household coverage.) In making the changes you see in this issue of the Castlegar News, we have been very, very conscious that we are changing a local, historical institution. But because we are a community newspaper we listen to our subscribers, and if enough of you don't like something we change and impiave it We believe the Castlegar News belongs as much to our community as it does to us, and for this reason we have challenged ourselves to reflect properly our city, district, citizens and readers. Much more important than the type and newsprint going into the Castlegar News is the energy, talent and enthusiasm of our employees. Without their devotion to excellence, the Castlegar News would be “just another newspaper."” it is therefore very appropriate, at this important stage in this newspaper's development, to recognize the contributions of the following staff members: Rene Brodman, Beth Davis, Anne Duske, Terrie Garrett, Ryon Guedes, Peter Harvey, Gisele Hebert, Lois Hughes, Liew Kereiff, Linda Kositsin, Tim Messenger and Mary Picton It is because of their demunstrated abilities and conscientious daily efforts that the Castlegar News is the newspaper it is We must also remember our 46 carrier boys and girls, and our newspaper distributors, because without them all our efforts wouid be for naughi. And the efforts of production employees at the central printing plant must also be recognized. Appreciation must also be extended to newspaper consultant Doug Finlay. He was often cn the job before 6 a.m. these past two months and worked through into the late evenings with the rest of us. His suggestions and counsel have been invaluable. On a more personal note, we at the Castlegar News are only too aware that these important steps are being taken only weeks away from the first anniversary of the death of the founding publisher of this newspaper, L. V. (Les) Campbell. We believe the memory of his inspiration for growth and improvement helped prod us on. Now . . . on to the next 30 years! Ske, CasTLEGN: “NEWS/
