Most murders committed at home

OTTAWA (CP) — Canadians
worried about getting murdered
in a dark alley or on a dimly lit

More than half of the 642
murders in Cana last year
were committed in the victim's
home, Statistics Canada said in a
release, and in 80 per cent of the
solved murders the victims
knew the killer.

While the 1987 homicide rate
was 13 per cent higher than

1986, it was the second lowest
yearly figure since 1980 and was
almost two per cent below the
annual average homicide rate of
the last 10 years, the statistics
agency said.

There were 2‘ murders for
every 100,000° Canadians last
year, less than a third of the rate
in the United States.

Police solved 82 per cent of
last year’s murders.

The number of people mur-
dered in their home was the

highest in 10 years, Sixty eight
percent of female homicides
were at home while 45 per cent
of male victims died in their
residence.

Of 1983 murders involving
family members, 78 women were
killed by their husbands, 33 men
were killed by their wives, 41
children were killed by their
parents, 15 parents were killed
by their kids and 16 people were
killed by siblings.

TORONTO (CP) — An evangelistic
church that recruits new members on
college and university campuses has
been described as a destructive cult
by former members and cult aware
ness groups.

The sect, headquartered in Boston,
is a 15-year-old offshoot of the
Church of Christ, a 100-year-old fun:
damentalist denomination of loosely
federated across North
America.

Former members of the offshoot
church, which also uses the name
Church of Christ, say it is a high
pressure sect that demands total
commitment from its members and
leaves emotional turmoil in its wake.

Sheri Morrison, a 22-year-old com
puter programmer who joined the
Central Toronto Church of Christ a
year ago, says the whole experience
left her feeling hopeless, depressed
and suicidal

Like all church members, Morrison
was matched with a “discipling part
ner,” another woman in the church
she was supposed to call each day to
discuss even the most personal de
tails of hg life.

Cynthi, Kisser, director of the
Cult Awareness Network in Chicago,
compares the church to a pyramid
sales scheme in its drive to accumu
late new members.
