While the 1987 homicide rate was 13 per cent higher than 1986, it was the second lowest yearly figure since 1980 and was almost two per cent below the annual average homicide rate of the last 10 years, the statistics agency said. There were 2‘ murders for every 100,000° Canadians last year, less than a third of the rate in the United States. Police solved 82 per cent of last year’s murders. The number of people mur- dered in their home was the highest in 10 years, Sixty eight percent of female homicides were at home while 45 per cent of male victims died in their residence. The sect, headquartered in Boston, is a 15-year-old offshoot of the Church of Christ, a 100-year-old fun: damentalist denomination of loosely federated across North America. Former members of the offshoot church, which also uses the name Church of Christ, say it is a high pressure sect that demands total commitment from its members and leaves emotional turmoil in its wake.
