Shanghai, June 13. — Extra- ordinary rumors are current here to the effect that the powers have set- tled the Chinese question by agree- ing to fofgive the dowager empress and her Manchu advisers, provided they promise to mend their future conduct. The Powers Are Now United New York, June 13.—A dispatch to the Tribune from London says: lomatic circles that the European powers have been united by the dis- missal of Prince Ching, and that in the purging of the Tsung Li Yamen of all its modern men the empress dowager has gone over to the Box- ers, bag and baggage, and that the powers have been forced to co-op- erate in the restoration of order at Pekin, even if the services of Rus- sian troops are required. Talley- rand’s ‘‘Good Europeans” have re- appeared upon the scene and have dropped their jealousies and sus- picions. A mixed force of 2000 marines will be inadequate, if Pekin should be in the possession of the Boxers and if the insurrection should spread from province to province.” More British Troops Going. Rossland, New different foreign legatioas there, One of these dispatches states that the secretary of the Belgian lega- tion was attacked twice on Monday and escaped, being maltreated by the mob. On the same day two officials of the British legation, serving as stu- dent interpreters, were attacked by a large crowd of roughs. The young Englishmen held the attack- ing party back for a time, but when the mob threatened to close in on them, they drew revolvers and by a show of force made their retreat without bodily injury. Great Sum Raised by Self Denial The balance sheets of the Salva- tion Army show that the total sav- ings effected by means of self de- nial (which is the same effort as it is now locally engaged in) last year amounted to $400,000, although the great majority of the army fol- lowers are poor. In this territory which enabled him to place the main portion of his troops on his flanks which he knew from former experience were his vulnerable parts.
