Globe ‘90 forum set for April 12 The public is invited to a Globe "90 forum April 12 from noon to | p.m. in room K-10 at the Castlegar campus Of Selkirk College. The six college delegates who attended the Globe '90 Environmental Conference and Trade Show in Vancouver March 19 to 23 will comprise 2 panel that will guide the forum through discussion of a series of eight topics on environmen- tal issues, a news release from Selkirk College says. Each of the six panelists will deliver a five-minute summary of the main points raised in the environmental issues session they attended at the Vancouver conference. Topics covered will include environmental policy and legislation, business development, sustainable: urban development, global issues, Progress by volunteers remarkable Last week, Sherrel Koreen, -president of the — and District Heritage Society, submitted a rogress report on the Castlegar Rail Station and the Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park to the British Columbia Heritage Trust. The trust gave a matching grant in 1983 of $25,000 for the and of the Chapel House on the island. In 1987, it gave a mat- ching grant of $40,000 for the restoration of the Castlegar Rail Station. Without these grants, these in- valuable heritage, and tourist would have been lost to the community forever. We would like to offer the report (slightly edited) a8 @ progress report and acknowledgement to the citizens of Castlegar. It reads as follows: It has been a very busy, productive and rewarding year for our society, The progress made by a handful tourism, and the forest industry. “‘As delegates we were exposed to a amount of i said Wendy Hurst, a instr- of is.truly The rail station has been a beehive of activity since last June when, with the grant from B.C. Heritage Trust, we were able to install the new roof and the en- uctor who attended the conference. “It was extremely interesting to meet and hear delegates from around the world, each bringing their own per- spective on the environmental issues that confront us all.” The delegates hope to share’ some of that global perspective at the Thur- sday forum. Selkirk College student delegates include Steven Svenson, who is enrolled in the univeristy Program and was sponsored by Selkirk College; Derek Ball, who is also studying in the university program and was sponsored by at a cost of $20,000. It tran- sformed the station and inspired us to do some lan- dscaping on three sides of the station. All shrubs, trees, plants and landscaping felt were donated by a local nurseryman and private donors. The pine”bark was donated by a local lumber company and all the labor was done by volunteers. We received as well $4,000 from the City (of Castlegar) which enabled us to bring the building up to fire-code standards. This entailed tearing out existing tongue-and-groove boar- ds, installing five-eights-inch gyproc on the walls and ceiling; a new ceiling beam and replacing the tongue- and-groove overlay. A smoke-alarm system was also installed at this same time. With two corporate and one private , we have enough funds to install a security system and this will be completed in April. The baggage room restoration was scheduled to be’ tom- pleted by March 31, after which we will set up displays for summer visitors. ie restoration work, I have applied To continue ¢ for a GO B.C. fprant but to this date have not rece a We have also applied to the city for a Bae grant of $12,000 to keep our office open. * Considering the fact that we are constantly under restoration, we ‘have had a large number of visitors during the summer months and we are optimistic that the numbers will be higher this yon byte pes em- hasis placed on tourism in the West r Zuckerberg Island Chapel House and Heritage Park had 11,000 visitors from around the world last summer and we expect to double that number this year, due largely to our recent exposure in several new travel publications and books.
