L SPORTS B2_CastlegarNews January 6, 1001 ; ) = - 5 ‘ , I é sulle Johnson back on track TORONTO (CP) — Canadian tr- ack fans shouldn't expect immediate success from sprinter Ben Johnson when he returns to competition next week, his coach said Thursday. Loren Seagrave has supervised the Toronto sprinter’s training since July; but had been prevented” from talking to the media by a special clause written into his contract. Johnson's adviser, Kemeel Azan, said Thursday that he was handing ‘‘some of the reins of com- munication’’ to Seagrave to take some of the media pressure off the runner. Johnson will compete in the 50- metre sprint next Friday night at the Hamilton Spectator Indoor Games, his first race since being suspended for a positive drug test at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. More than two years later, John- son is back in the spotlight. But Seagrave says he won't be disappoin- ted if his runner doesn’t win in Hamilton. “The one thing I want to stress, with all the media and-alt the hype; this ain’t the’world championships, folks,"’ said Seagrave, referring to the world outdoor championships in Japan this summer. ‘That's what we're pointing at — Tokyo in August, that’s the real focus for this season. “Hamilton, although it's the first race back in a long time, it’s just maybe the first step back in a path up the mountain.””’. It’s a safe bet that Johnson won't be able’ to sleepwalk to victory, despite the absence of archrival Carl Lewis and American speedster Leroy Burrell. Three of the four other lanes have been filled and include Americans Dennis Mitchell, Andre ‘Cason and Mike Marsh. = Mitchell was a finalist in the 100 metres at Seoul, Cason won the world junior 100 metres in Sudbury, Ont., in 1988, and Marsh is a highly touted runner from UCLA. Charlie Francis, Johnson’s former coach who will do color commentary on the race for CTV, thinks the Toronto runner is in for a rough ride. “They've kicked him when he's down,"’ Francis told Southam Syn- diate columnist Michael Farber. “'They went and got the top three American indoor runners over the last two years. “They are paying -these guys peanuts, barely expenses. The run- ners are coming because they know they've got Ben at his weakest, coming back after two years. If they , beat hiterhey know they can double or triple their fees for the major meets, Still, Seagrave thinks Johnson can regain the world indoor record for 60 metres this year. Johnson’s mark of 6.41 seconds was stripped by the In- ternational Amateur Athletic i i his issi of steroid use at the Dubin inquiry. The current record of 6.50 is held by American Lee McRae. “I think (a world record) is achievable in the first winter, the fir- st season,” said Seagrave. ‘‘Ben’s one of the finest sprint performers and finest sprint athletes, bar none.”"* VANCOUVER (CP). =. SPORTS BRIEFS Pats get No. 1 NEW YORK — The worst record in the NFL this season paid off- for the New England Patriots when it was confirmed Thursday that they will have the No. 1 choice in April’s college draft. ‘The Pats finished 1-15. Cleveland, 3-13, gets the second selection. ‘Atianta; Denver, the Los-Angeles- Rams -and-Phoenix-each finished | at 5-11, and Atlanta gets the No. 3 pick because its 1990 opponents had the poorest record among those teams. The Falcons’ opponents finished 129-127 to 137-119 for opponents of both Denver and the Rams, and 143-113 for teams that played Phoenix. Denver and Los Angeles will flip a coin to determine the fourth and fifth picks because they finished with the same record dnd their op- ponents Le tine same records. The same procedure will determine the eighth and‘hinth spots between Green Bay and San Diego, both 6-10 ‘against opponents with records of 129-127. Dyal going to practice EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Raiders have moved former starting tight end Mike Dyal onto their practice squad as they prepare for their Jan. 13 NFL playoff game. Dyal and the rest of the Raiders practised in persistent rain for about 90 minutes Thursday. “It’s good to be working, even if that means standing out.in the rain,” Raiders coach Art Shell said. “If you’re working now, that means you're still in the hunt (for the Super Bowl).”” Dyal’s return to practice after missing most of the season with a hamstring pull might indicate a possible roster move in the next 10 days, although the Raiders would only say that is a possibility. The Raiders, 12-4 and champions of the AFC West, will play either Cincinnati, Kansas City of Miami, with the winner of the Jan. 13 game ing to the AFC game a week later. Schroeder best in NFL NEW YORK — Buffalo defensive end Bruce Smith and Los Angeles Raiders quarterback Jay Schroeder were chosen Thursday as the AFC's players of the month for December, while Washington run- ning back Earnest Byner and New Orleans linebacker Rickey Jackson were picked as the NFC’s top players.
