10 CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, April 11, 1963 Richardson Writes On Controversy Dear Mr, Editor: Since Chairman Sylvest.was requested by the Fire Chief to re- lleve me of my dutics as Fire Com- missioner, I should like, through the medium of your paper, to place a few facts before the informed that there has been no planned procedure in case of fire Posted or circulated to staff and employees, With oxygen piped into wards, there is a need for regula- tions requiring closing of lines, A Ppamphict has been Prepared but of Castlegar, The recommendations \publish- ed in the Castlegar News were Presented to the fire chief for dis- cussion, They were to be, in fact, ‘kicked around”. The resulting rea- ction has been to “kick out” the Fire Commissioner! These recom- mendations were suggested to me by a former fire chief with many years experience,’ and were con- sidered to be suitable for a volun- teer group who had pride in being in a position of such civic respon- siblity, a and with a sincere wish to maintain a. high standard of pro- ficiency in fire fighting skills. At the request: of. Council to discuss' these recommendations with the Fire Chief, I attended a meeting and was insulted by Ex- Commissioner Carr and asked to “get the hell out” by Fire Chief Lewis, I left as requested. Point No, 14 was written in in view. of the chlorine gas being shipped through Castlegar. I have been informed that this fs approx- imately 5 to 6 cars weekly. In view of two recent accidents involving chlorine, one being in Ontario,. it seemed to me to be of vital im- Portance. This is not.a matter to be lightly treated, and one wond- ers, view of the attitude of the Fire Chief, if he is even aware that these tank cars go through the village, After submitting these recom- mendations, I enquired into Hos- Pital fire safety practices and was AOA FOR AIRLINE RESERVATIONS MEXICO - HAWAIIAN ANB EUROPEAN: TOURS ARRANGED ‘CASTLEGAR AGENT. Sta- tistics of villages of similar size in- dicate that Castlegar Fire Depart- ment budget to be of proportion. Many fire departments also main- tain and operate a 24 hour ambu- lance service with their budgets. I am not opposed to a reasonable budget with a well trained fire department, I would like to emphasize that T have the greatest admiration and respect for the members of the Cas- t Stanley Dawson of Salmo and Mrs, T..S.
