MONTREAL (CP) — Jer.
emy has not used cocaine in
more than two years, but he
still attends Cocaine Anony-
mous meetings for support
and because they “keep me in
touch with my disease, with
the reality of my life.”

years ago and it keeps me
plugged in to what's going

Jeremy, 31, is a former
executive who used to go to
great lengths to get money to
support his cocaine habit.

He would steal money from
his wife and even pay his
dealer in coats from the
warehouse of the clothing
firm where he worked.

“By the end of my addic-
tion,” Jeremy recently told a
group of drug abusers, “I had
a dealer delivering me coke
at 11 a.m. at the office, and
by the time I got home at 4
p.m., there'd be another
gram in the mailbox.

“I was so sick that not only
would I consume two grams a
day of coke by snorting, but I
would swallow half a 26.
ounce bottle of scotch, gin or
anything else that came
along.

“I would get up in the
morning, take a shower,
shave, put on my new suit,
walk into the office and start
the whole thing over again.

“I'm a junkie like everyone
else here.”

Cocaine Anonymous, a self.
helf group for recovering ad
dicts, was founded in Mon
treal last August by three

former cocaine users. It
works on the same principles
as Alcoholics Anonymous.

From 15 to 70 people be-
tween the ages of 18 and 50
attend weekly meetings, said
Robert, who is in his early
30s. He’s been clean for 3'/:
years now and helped es-
tablish the Montreal chapter.

The group has borrowed
and revised Alcoholics An.
onymous’s 12 steps to re-
covery.

They include the recog-
nition of a power “greater
than ourselves” that can re-
store the addict to sanity,
continual séif-appraisal and
an apology to friends and rel-
atives who have been harmed
by the addict's problem.

Cocaine — which sells for
between $90 and $150 a gram
— is not restricted to high-
earners such as Jeremy.

“The use of cocaine has
spread across every sector of
society,” said Dr. Juan Neg-
rete, director of the Alcohol
and Drug Dependence Unit
of the Montreal General Hos-
pital, “but it conti s to be
an expensive drug.”

Services is based in Cali-
fornia, but does little more
thin supply literature and
other material to local bran
ches, said Robert.

The Montreal branch is
self-funded through
donations which in some
cases pay for nominal rents
for meeting halls, as well as
for a 24-hour answering ser-
vice, pamphlets and coffee

Shelley, 31, a business-
woman who “put my retail
industry up my nose,” said
that in one year, she spent at
least $60,000 on cocaine.
