ELVIS MARRIES... Elvis broke the hearts of his female fans when he wed Priscilla Beaulieu in 1967. Marriage broke up six years later. 50,000 ted ELVIS: for anniversary By WOODY BAIRD Press Associated MEMPHIS, TENN. — The throngs anticipated at Elvis Presley's Graceland mansion next week won't see the upstairs room where he fell dead 10 years ago, wracked by drug abuse, but thousands will bear candles past his grave and silently salute the king of rock 'n' roll. Up to 50,000 people are expected to tour the white-columned Presley shrine in a nine-day celebration beginning Aug. 8. “They're all headed this way,” said Todd Morgan, a spokesman for the Graceland Division of Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc., the company that runs tours through the singer's residence. A citywide program called Elvis International Tribute Week will include everything from an Elvis memorial foot race and a memento swap to a light show and a prayer service. “We stay in contact with the fans all year,” Morgan said. “We've not talked to anybody who's not coming, and the people we've talked to have not talked to anyone who's not coming.” Presley, who was 42 when he died of heart disease Aug. 16, 1977, received fanatical devotion as an enter- tainer in both life and death. His beginnings were humble. When he was born in a two-room house in Tupelo, Miss., on Jan. 8, 1935, the $15 doctor's fee was paid by a local welfare agency. A twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley, was stillborn. . DRIVES TRUCK A marginal student, Elvis became a truck driver after high school. He made his first record in 1953, paying $3.98 at the Mephis Recording Studio to cut-two songs, My Happiness and That's When Your Heartaches Begin. Accompanying himself on the guitar, he reportedly made the record as a gift for his mother. His first commercial recording, including That's All Right Mama and Blue Moon of Kentucky, was made at the Memphis Recording Studio in July 1964. In January 1956, RCA released its first Elvis single, a recording of Heartbreak Hotel, which became Presley's first million seller. . That same year Presley appeared in Love Me Tender, the first of his 31 movies. While his career was still on the rise, in 1958, he was drafted into the Army, his induction reported in newspapers throughout the country. While in the Army in West Germany, Presley met Priscilla Beaulieu, the 14-year-old daughter of an Air Force officer. She and Presley were married in 1967 and divorced in 1978. Their only child, Lisa Marie, was born in 1968 and is Presley's sole heir. This year during the tribute week, there's an Elvis laser light show for $4 at the city's planetarium, a $10 rock 'n’ roll party at a Mempl motel and an $18 memorial service “in a revival atmosphere.” SWAP TRINKETS There are $2.50 tours of the studio where Presley cut his first record, $35 trips to his bitthplace in Tupelo, and a $2 admission charge for “fanfest” where collectors can buy and swap Elvis trinkets. For $1.50 fans can visit the public school Presley attended and see the auditorium where he performed in a talent show. For $10 they can attend a “nostalgia concert” staged by some of his former musicians. But the main attraction will be the Graceland complex, which includes Presley's house and grounds, a museum, his two jetliners and a shopping centre devoted to Elvis souvenirs. Associated Press LOS ANGELES — Elvis and Priscilla. She was his living doll and he was her little boy. She would eventually part with him and find a long-delayed adulthood, but he would never outgrow the indulgences that helped kill ‘im. Elvis Presley died 10 years ago, four years after his divorce from the former Priscilla Beaulieu. has remained attached to Elvis — as one of three executors of his estate and as the mother of his daughter, Lisa Marie, who will gain control of his Memphis estate, Graceland, when she reaches age 25 on Feb. 1, 1993. After leaving the domain of Elvis, Priscilla built her own life, as a boutique owner, sh and co-host of ABC-TV's Those Amazing ‘Animals, before landing a role as Jenna Wade in CBS-TV's Dallas. Now 42, she gave birth March 1 to her second child, the son of her fiance, Brazilian writer-director Marco Garibaldi. “Am I exploiting the name of Presley? The name has hurt me more than it has helped,” she said in a 1985 interview. She declined to be interviewed as the 10th anniversary of Elvis’ death approached. But she has already said much in her 1985 book, Elvis and Me, and in earlier interviews. Priscilla caught Elvis’ eye in 1959 when she was a 14-year-old Air Force brat and he was a 24-year-old rock ‘n’ roll star serving in the army. LIVE TOGETHER . A long romance followed, not to be consummated until their wedding night in 1967, even though they lived and slept together much of that time, Priscilla wrote in Elvis and Me. She would bear Elvis’ only acknowledged child, Lisa Marie, and meet his every whim, including indulgences in fantasy sessions and wearing clothes and makeup that he “I looked like one of the lead dancers in the Folies-Bergere,” she said after an Elvis-ordered Las Vegas makeover that left her with teased hair and makeup so heavy it hid the eolor of her eyes. “I was Elvis’ living doll, to be fashioned as he pleased,” she wrote. He introduced her to the drugs that would eventually take over his life and warned her not to complain when she heard rumors of his affairs with such personalities as Ann-Margret, Tuesday Weld, Juliet Prowse and Nancy Sinatra. He once took her to a morgue, where the couple stared at the corpse of an infant. By then, he was a long way from the endearingly bewildered GI she'd met in West Germany many years before. . »» long romance He was stationed at Bad Nauheim, living with his grandmother in an off-base house often full of friends and followers. It was unaccustomed comfort for an enlisted man, but then, there was only one GI who had scored such hits as Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel and Jailhouse Rock, the title of one of the movies in which he starred. Priscilla was the adopted daughter of Capt. Joseph Paul Beaulieu, who was stationed at the American air base in Wiesbaden. SPOTS HER A Presley friend spotted the striking Priscilla as she sat with her brother, Don, in the officers’ service club. Offered a chance to ‘meet the heart-throb of her generation, Priscilla prevailed on her dubious parents and was taken to the house in Bad Nauheim, where Elvis played the piano, sang with friends and went out of his way to impress her. Eventually, he used his disarming charm to persuade her parents to let Priscilla move to Memphis to finish high school after he left the army. She moved into Graceland in 1963. Priscilla made sure Elvis’ bedroom thermostat was set low, and that the lights throughout Graceland were kept dim, the way the master of the house liked it. “Every night before dinner was served, I came downstairs first and checked with the maids to see that his food was just the way he liked it. I loved babying Elvis,” she wrote. “He had a little-boy quality that could bring out the mother instinct in any woman.” The couple married May 1, 1967. Lisa Marie was born the next year. But the relationship was already deteriorating. Elvis was becoming more dependent on drugs to get him to sleep and wake him up. He issued a no-wives-on-tour policy when he resumed concerts. Priscilla had an affair with a dance instructor, and the couple: saw less and less of each other. Elvis “started losing perspective of himself and others. To me he became increasingly unreachable,” she wrote. They were divorced Oct. 9, 1973, in a closed court session in which she kept running her fingers over Elvis’ swollen hands.
