(~ CASTLEGAR NEWS, July 8, 1981 Canada may take more refugees OTTAWA (CP) — The federal government is con- sidering opening the coun- try's doors a little wider to Poles who have opted to get out of their politically and economically unstable home- jand. Immigration Minister Lloyd Axworthy said last week he is prepared to consider accepting more than the original target of 4,000 self-exiled persons from Eastern Europe this year if the situation in Poland shows such action is warranted. He said he has asked Paul Hartling, the United Nations high commissioner for refu- gees, for a report within the next 10 days or so on how much pressure there is on the refugee camps in Austria, the gathering spot for many people who have left Poland. “If there are new con- ditions there and new prob- lems there, then we'll take a good hard look at it,” he told reporters. At the same time, Ax- worthy said the government has already made a major effort with respect to East- ern Europe by almost doub- ling the number of persons it will accept from that region this year. “We're really doing our share,” he said. Hartling, the Geneva- based high commissioner, met Axworthy and External Affairs Minister Mark Mac- Guigan last Thursday to discuss worldwide refugee problems. He told a news conference there are probably several hundred Poles in Austria in We Asia still look- ing for resettlement and there are about five million refugees in Africa, two mill- ion in Pakistan and thous- ands in Central and Latin America, While is ne- s cessary in some cases, the best solution is finding ways to allow refugees to return to their own countries, he said. The Canadian government is sponsoring about 8,000 from Asia this year and has com- mitted about $6 million to the United Nations High Com- mission for Refugees. Axworthy said the refugee issue is not a subject that can be dealt with on adhoc basis because it is continuing prob- lem. It must become a major Historic quilt BRANTFORD, ONT. Hartling was in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa to make a pitch for more government money to help finance refu- gee operations around the world and to tell Canadians there still is a, need to resettle thousands of refu- gees not able to return to their homelands. Axworthy said the govern- ment deliberately set aside for 2,000 additional refugees or self-exiled persons from any one region. Those additional spots could be used to allow more Poles to come to Canada as well as refugees from other places, such as El Salvador, he said. Neither Hartling nor Ax- worthy predicted any prob- lems with the governments of Poland or the Soviet Union should Canada decide to take more Poles. At worst it can trigger both physical and psychological illness. And as a woman enters menopause — literally the end of menstruation — other discomforts and ills may ap- pear. Unfortunately, Dixarit is of no assistance in any of the other discomforts of men- opause. Because of this, Yuen prefers to try the hormone therapy first. As the production of estro- gen ceases, the onset of hot flashes may start. In some women, this flushing is rela- tively light and causes few problems, but in others it can be distressing. Yuen says more and more doctors are becoming aware of the possible bad side- effects of too much estrogen and are trying to use the smallest possible doses for the shortest possible time. Any woman who has a history of cancer, breast tumors, stroke, high blood pressure, gall bladder dis- ease, hepatitis or diabetes needs to be extremely cau- tious about taking estrogen. However, Yuen says estro- gen still provides the best control. It has the added ad- vantage of being effective in dealing with other discom- forts of menopause such as dryness and thinning of the vaginal walls, increased ten- dency to vaginal infection and brittle bones.
