Liberals under Jean Chretien have the
support of 46 per cent of decided
voters, a Gallup poll suggests.

That’s a slight \decline since July,
when Gallup found Liberal support
was at 49 per cent

Support for the New Democratic
Party, led by Audrey McLaughlin,
also dropped slightly, to 22 per cent
from 23 per cent over a month ago.

Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s
ruling Conservatives gained one per-
centage point, to 20 per cent

The recently formed separatist
Block Quebecois has five per cent
support nationally, while the Reform
party has six per cent

The results are based on 1,045 in-
terviews with adults, conducted Aug.
8-11. A sample that size is considered
accurate within four percentage poin-
ts, 19 in 20 times.

Across Canada, fewer voters said
they are undecided — 27 per cent,
down from 34 per cent a month ago

But in Quebec more than one-third
of voters -—— 36 per cent — were still
undecided. Gallup says this reflects
the impact of the Bloc Quebecois’s
first byelection victory, in the Mon-
treal riding of Laurier-Sainte Marie

Indecision is also a major factor in
the Atlantic provinces, Gallup says,
noting 37 per cent of voters had no
party preference.

The three major parties lost ground
in Quebec, each dropping about five
percentage poits since July, although
the Liberals still enjoyed more sup-
port than the Conservatives or New
Democrats.

Twenty-one per cent of decided
voters in Quebec supported the Bloc
Quebecois.

The Reform party, the other major
regional party, had 17 per cent sup-
port in the Prairie provinces and in
British Columbia.
