News August 11, 1990 LOCAL NEWS PULPIT & PEW By Father HERMAN ENGBERINK Catholic Church of St. Rita radio announcement: cident between cities X and Y. Traffic holdup of 3 km. Traffic in the other director is held up for 2 km because of curious The difference between these two lies in the word pleasure or lust. Someone who enjoys looking on acts out of mere curiosity, but someone who sees acts Out of concern, Such a person does not only seize We often hear the one word, play or showman, but I cannot find one word for people who like to look on. Perhaps we are dealing here with a new species of people for whom a new word has still to be found. But what do we mean when we talk of these curious people who like to look on? Do we talk of people who have their eyes open and pay attention to what happens around them? We were told in our youth already that one of the principles of wordly wisdom is to keep one’s eyes open. Speaking of curious spectators one must have a class of specially docile students in mind. Moreover they must be people who have fun looking on, they must find it amusing. Or am I on the wrong track? Are they amusing others? Perhaps the police? But that cannot be, because the next day you read in the newspaper that spectators hindered the police and the ambulances from removing victims from the scene of the accident. Sometimes spectators increase the risk of accident when the police have to arrest bankrobbers. Such spec- tators are also often the cause of slowdowns in the traffic flow on the highways. Perhaps they have been seduced by pictures on TV, where they see many examples of accidents and catastrophes. At suppertime we are fed with pictures of victims from plane crashes and terrorist attacks. And the late news hours sends us to bed with dreams about horror scenes, terror and people in agony. Many of these pictures call for sen- timents of concern, but the result can the to help when there is a need, he acts also with discretion. A person who is concerned knows when he/she has to look the other way and remain silent. The mere spectator is not far away from becoming a sensation monger but the concerned citizen protects the victims against inquisitive looks and obtrusive questions. Journalists can be in very difficult positions at times. Nobody can take away from them the responsibility to judge what is in the public interest, what is necessary, important infor- mation, and what is a mere spec- tacular report or picture. The Boulevard Press presents, as already condemned criminals, people who have only been accused of breaking a law. Nobody can estimate the damage caused to the person in question and nobody can measure the shame and the pain inflicted on the family. The curious spectator exagge! likes to to build up his own story; he acts and thoughtlessly. The concerned person is not in- terested in the story, he does not ask, **Who is he or she?’’ He asks what is needed and considers how he can help. Perhaps we have still to learn that our help can sometimes exist only in not being a hindrance to the helpers or in controlling our desire to see how superfictatty ‘our neighbours behave at difficult times. Perhaps without any difficulty we could add a few beatitudes to the list given to us by our Lord. What about these? Happy the one who does not find pleasure in the sorrows of others. . . . Happy the one who covers my guilt with his mantle of mercy. . . . Happy the one who does not gossip about my failures... . BUSINESS DIRECTORY TELEPHONE 365-5210 wan be occepted u oo ro 5 of. m. Many onlookers consider them- selves mere spectators, somewhat in the roll of an actor who can play his part in a gigantic show without fear of getting hurt or concerned. Many spec- tators make use of horror pictures to protect themselves against the long periods of boredom in their lives. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus did not only praise the man who had pity on his robbed and wounded fellow man, but also criticized those who passed by uncon- cerned. The misfortune of others is not a topic for spectators. What must we do then? Moving on without looking around is not the solution either. There are times that we have to look very carefully. But there is a great difference between looking and seeing.
