New York began the day with an 8':-game lead in the NL East over Pittsburgh. Los Angeles had a 6/2 -game margin over Houston. The Dodgers lost their 3rd in a row and have scored just 17 runs in the last 12 games Gooden, 166, improved his career record against the Dodgers to 8-1. He struck out five and walked one but needed relief help from Randy Myers after Mickey Hatcher singled to open the ninth. Myers set down the next three batters, st riking out two, to earn his 21st save. Gooden, facing a Los Angeles lineup that had a 178 lifetime average against him, ran into trouble in the fifth inning when Mike Scioscia hit an RBI single. Only in two other innings did a Dodger reach second base. REDS 6 CUBS 4 CHICAGO (AP) — Nick Esasky hit a three-run homer and Paul O'Neill had two doubles and a triple as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicagq Cubs 6-4 Saturday for their fourth straight vietory. | Cincinnati reliever John Franco allowed no hits in 1 23 innings to earn his National League-leading 30th save in 31 opportunities, Since June 30, Franco has allowed just one earned run in 32 1-3 innings for an ERA of 0.28, Jack Armstrong, 3-6, allowed six hits and four walks in six-plus innings, ending a personal three-game losing streak. Armstrong was inserted in the starting rotation after being called up from the Nashville farm club on Friday. Eric Davis led off the Reds’ second with a walk against Greg Maddux, 16-7, who has won just once in 10 starts since the All-Star break. O'Neill followed with a double and Esasky connected for his 13th homer to give Cincinnati a 3-1 lead. The Cubs scored a run in the fifth on Maddux’s Frun-scoring groundout but Cincinnati made it 5-2 in the sixth. Ryne Sandberg had a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh. Mark Grace's RBI single gave Chicago a 1 lead in the first. AMERICAN LEAGUE TWINS 8 ROYALS 6 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ~— Pinch-hitter Jim Dwyer's two-run single off relief ace Steve Farr capped a six-run rally in the seventh inning. lifting the Minnesota Twins to an 8-6 victory over the Kansas City Royals Sat urday Three Kansas City pitchers, including loser Jerry Don Gleaton, 0-3, failed to get an out in the seventh as the Twins sent 11 batters to the plate. The rally included Kirby Puckett's 100th RBI of the season and 400th of his career * Singles by Al Newman, Dan Gladden and Tom Herr made it 6-3 and chased starter Bret Saberhagen. After Jeff Montgomery yielded Puckett's RBI double, Gleaton relieved and Ken Hrbek blooped a two-run double down the left-field line to tie the game. Gleaton hit Gene Larkin with a pitch and Randy Bush loaded the bases with a bunt single. Farr relieved and, one out later, gave up Dwyer's line drive to centre. It was Dwyer's first hit since Minnésota acquired him Aug. 29 and the 86th pinch hit — third-best ever of his career Farr has biown just six saves in 22 chances. Mark Portugal, 2-2, the third of five Twins pitchers, worked one inning. Jeff Reardon earned his 35th save with a scoreless ninth. Kansas City used a four-run sixth that included former Twin Jim Eisenreich’s two-run homer — his first since Aug. 13, 1987 — to take a 5-2 lead. The Royals added a run in the seventh on Bill Buckner’s RBI single. In the first, Willie Wilson walked, advanced to third on a wild pitch and a balk by Minnesota starter Fred Toliver, and scored on Kevin Seitzer's groundout. Bush's 14th homer tied it in the third and Gladden's fifth-inning homer, his 10th, gave the Twins a 2-1 lead. YANKEES 4 (AP) — Jose Canseco hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning off recently acquired reliever Dale Mohorcic as the Oakland Athletics beat the New York Yankees 54 in a fight-marred game Saturday After Canseco put the A's ahead with his major-league leading 35th home run, Carney Lansford doubled and Neil Allen replaced Mohorcic, 2-7. Pinch-hitter Dave Parker struck out and Allen then hit Mark McGwire on the helmet with a pitch. McGwire charged Allen and both benches emptied as players from both sides gathered around the mound. NFL season upon us Well, it's NFL time. Regular season begins today and we can once again spend our Monday nights in mindless bliss in front of the TV listening to Al, Dan and Frank spew their collective knowledge on the American grid iron scene while highly over paid grown men hurl their bodies at each other on the field. Ivs an interesting study in the American sports dream. Every youngster interested in the sport busily occupies his time trying to emulate his favorite football hero. Have you seen the young Brian Bosworth clones in Seattle lately? How does a kid feel when his favorite football star calls the Sport “a hobby” I'm still euriows as to how Bo Jackson worked that deal — to play pro baseball and football — out We can still take pride in the fact that the CFL — even in its current sink or sWim state — is not as riddled with the shameful carpet bagging opportu. mism as its U.S.counterpart. When was the last time an entire CFL franchise was sold to another city? Die hard fans in Baltimore and most recently, St. Louis are still totally disillusioned following the sales of their respective teams to other cities. And I'm still confused when the Oakland, or is it Los Angeles, Raiders play But despite its shortfalls, the NFL is gaining popularity among football fans north of the 49th. I believe a big part of this popularity stems from the league's accessibility. We'll probably get: ‘moré televised NFL games here after half a Season than we got of the CFL over the whole season The CFL, in its infinite wisdom, has gone overboard to show its ineptitude when selling television rights to the networks. The league has sold major rights to pay television and the Global network — or Canadian Football Network in the case of its CFL telecasts. Global is not available to viewers outside the Lower Mainland area and pay TV represents a fraction of viewers in the province The small pockets of staunch CFL supporters are left in the dark as the CFL focusses on the larger — allegedly more lucrative markets in an attempt to gain more revenue. What the league fails to realize is this U.S.-style opportunism fails where it's ultimately supposed to succeed. Canadian football fans in large cities are going to the CFL games and watching the U.S. version on the television at home, while the only alternative for us is to watch the U.S. games. Noboby in the big city is paying attention to the televised CFL game because they're either watching the NFL games on TV or going to the CFL games. Anyway, the NFL starts today and we're bound to get loads of games. The AFC East division will again be a three way battle between the Indianapolis (formérly Baltimore) Colts, the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins. New England may challenge but won't do it arid the Jets are a write off this year. The AFC Central will be wrapped up by the Dawgs in Cleveland, The Browns are too tough for Houston, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. If Warren Moon can keep his interceptions down this year, Houston may provide a welcome upset In the West it’s the Broncos and Elway again The Brones have to work on their defence but Elway has three excellent targets — Vance Johnson, Mark Jackson and Ricky Nattiel — on the receiving end. The addition of ex-Dallas running back Tony Dorsett may give Denver a stronger running attack Seattle and the Los Angeles Raiders wilt be involved in a divisional dogfight all season leaving San Diego and Kansas City duelling for draft picks In the NFC there will be some great football this year. In the East, the Giants will prevail as long as Phil Simms) remains healthy at the quarterback Position. His favorite target, tight end Mark Bavaro, missed training camp as a holdout but should be there for the season. The rgst of the division is a toss-up as the Washington Red Skins will try, unsuccessfully, to defend their Super Bowl crown Dallas, Philadelphia and Phoenix will be bashing it out for no real reason. Minnesota, riding high after upsetting San Francisco and New Orleans in last year's playoffs, will take the NFC Central division in a walk The Bears have lost their teeth, Walter Payton and Willie Galt are gone, and Detroit didn't. even win a pre-season game. Vinny Testaverde will give Tampa Bay some spark and the Buckaneers may end up witb a wild card but they'll have to get by Green Bay to do it. Look for the Packers as an upset team this year. In the West it's San Francisco again. New Orleans will be tough but not tough enough to stop the 49ers. The Rams and the Falcons don't stand a chance. And the Super Bowl winner is I can't say until the playoffs start. See you in January September 4, 1988 « D Kootenay Savings GREAT SHOT... .
