Funeral Services For James'Deans In Casilegar Tuesday - James Deans, 79, a Parity Would Stabilize Castlegar Dear Sir: I wish to offer an opinion or two as regards the current IWA atrike, There are certain aspects of the strike which seem to have becn overplayed by the various media of communications and others which have received no attention at all. Among those articles which seem to have been trumped into Meaningless cliche are argu- ments for settlement based upon the effect of the strike on cur- rent area economy and the posi- tion that immediate parity would all but destroy the interior lum- ber industry. Among the thoughts that have remained obscure, I wish to |the place the argument that parity for the IWA would give rise to increased prending, it It is a basic of economic theory that the more money that people have to spend, the more they do, in f |. The’ effect’ would made the’ statement thee thoy do not seek immediate parity. It should also be noted that Celgar offered the IWA 4c an hour on a one-year extension of the: presently expired ‘contract sometime ‘before negotiations began, This offer was then with- drawn ‘by Celgar. The exact reasons for with- drawal are not known to me. However, if’ I’may venture an opinion drawn from conversa- tions with others, it is felt that the -Lumberman’s Association was responsible for the ‘with- drawl. Obviously, $4c\ an hour over a one year period is far : better an offer than the Monroe eport offer. I ‘At ‘this point, it is neces- sary to consider the implications of the Celgar withdrawal of. its | offer, one arrives at the opinion that the Assoclation must have known or ‘had some notion of the direction and scope: of the Monroe Report. In’ support ‘of this conclusion, remember some of the statements made by cer- tain members of the provincial government, notably the minist- er of Iabor. DA fet: would the Celgar: Proposal iy as being unreasonable as kas been done by the IWA. Rather .than | prolong ' the -,| fight for parity, which ‘will'evem- tually have to be paid, the effeet would be one of shortening the me over: which parity, could) dhe ~ A durther be that there : is'a i be tween industry and government] d int the province. This is an op!n- members of various -Srou and. may seem’ unfounded ‘and ‘unreasonable. It is, however, an gpinton that gains strength in iew of what has happened in the recent dispute. Finally, the IWA refusal of Monree Report. gains cre- dence when ‘viewed in light of Celgar’s $4c proposal. I wish to offer the sugges- that has long been held by}. labor: wi tion that the lumber industry re- to continue’ Te leas as ita a cdusts #9 the costs of, parity. r, BAND ‘CHOIR EVERYONE " Adolts 75¢ Stanley Humphries Secondary School TONIGHT Thursday, December -14 8 pm. ‘Students ane ¥ NIGHT WELCOME: ‘Children 25e ¢4 ve of Castlegar, died: Saturday at the.
