Tuesday evening, it was the Rossland Minor Hockey banquet at the high school cafeteria and with a team on hand that came close to winning a provincial championship there was that something in the air that always follows a top-calibre team wherever it goes. President Gordon Turnbull opened the show with a hearty welcome to all the boys and their mentors as well as the guests. President Turnbull said that it had been a very good season and that he would look forward to more of the same in the future. Among the guests were long-time president of the association Jim Markle, Lions club president, Wayne Ashley, representing the Bantams sponsoring club, Jim Drake, whose family has been to the forefront in helping in various ways to advance the minor hockey cause in our area. Roland Lerose, who presented a cheque to sponsor a Midget t~am in Rossland next season, Bobby Sherwood, who presented an award to Clyde Moore for his work in an officiating role over the past year or two, plus this reporter, who always likes being around when our kids have something to celebrate. , In the kitchen the women who lend a lot of support to every aspect of the minor hockey movement in our 'town, were busy with the preparation of a delightful meal of spaghetti and the trimmings. Joe Zanussi reported one of his wee novices packed in five plates of spaghetti and meatballs. This season there were Iour divisions: the Novices, ably handled by Joe and Bob Z;inussi with an assist from John Stanton, the \itoms looked after by Lou DeRosa, Bruce Manson and Bob Johnson, the Pee Wees where Geoff Chambers handled the presentations, 'the Bantams and coach Rich Chobanuk, he was assisted by Jim Drake, manager Dan Castle and Maurice .MacArthur. . Next year we shall have a ·Midget category to give the :kids yet another peak to ROLAND LE ROSE (RIGHT) of West Kootenay Wholesale proudly displays one of the set of sweaters his company bought for next season's Rossland Midget ho~key club. The co-operation in all sectors was excellent. I was in charge of the scorekeeping for Firday and Saturday and everything went smoothly. The help I got was top-notch and I'd like to thank them all for their effort and Dan Mailey and Randy Emery of the 69ers. Out on the ice we saw some real good hockey. The Rossland Labatts with an excellent team effort went on to the championship with an unblemished record, winning over a sharp Castlegar team in the "A" final. In the "B" it was an equally sharp Outlaw team from Grand Forks coming out on top over the Rex Hotel from Trail. On Sunday it was a switch over to the curling rink where after a lot of nervewracking cancellations by 1 ......... 1 T --!-- _____ L __ _ vacant spots and the result was a very pleasant days curling and socializing for all participating. At the annual beef stew supper the day wound down with the presentations of prizes and annual round of jokes to liven the proceedings. In competition the Jim Bateman rink won the "A" side with 19 points. With him were Clyde Nyman, Bernie Fourt and Gene Mauriello. Second was Ivan Bell (16) assisted by Keith Woods, Herb Castle and Otto Anderson. Low score went to the Rolly Gariepy rink with three points. Jack Cox, Dick Vermiere and Leo Bosse helped Rolly. In the "B" section the Carl Seefeldt foursome was top dog. Everett Hammel was third, Jock Irvin, second, and Doug Haines, lead. Next was Angus Popplewell with help from J obn Bruce and Jake Hendricks. Carl's crew had 18 and Angus' 16 while Ted Leslie was low man with eight points. Helping Ted were Ray Scott, Ernie Brown and Toby Edworthy. So ended another good season of curling for us in Rossland. Next week I'll detail the ladies' final competition and their season windup.
