Office Taylor bloek, 136 Co. Condition of His Patient. Attorney-General Eberts defended the government’s action in accepting August, Heinze’s bond for the Columbia & West- ern railway company, that was unler discugsion in the Provincial house yester- day. Mr. Ebertssaid that until the bond was turned in last October the govern- mont was in ignoranc e of Dewdney’s with the company, but the fact that the Lieutenant-Governor was a pro- visional director of the railway company made no difference in the action of the government. He said that the Lienten- ant-Governor took no part inthe meet- e| ings of the executive counells which was the L al advisers, but he was not the advisor of the executive council. In answer to Mr. Williams’ criticism of the fact that Mr. Heinze gave a deed of the smelter company Mr. Eberts said there that was nothing out of the way in such Proceedings. At the time . Heinze signed the bond he had nearly $1,000,000 worth of oroperty in British Columbia. Mr. Sberts said he had inquired in New York as to the standing of Mr. Heinze and had been informed that it was very good. He submitted that the govern- ment had done everything possible to find out the financial standie ed of Mr. Heinze, and was perfectly justified in accepting his security, Messrs. Munn, Ewen and Hendry had carried out the Kaslo-Slocan line under a 25,000 bond. Mr. Heinze was equally govd, and the puttii ne up up of ot personal security in the sun of 000 was ample proof of his intention to carry out the line to Pen- ticton in its entirety. NO HASTY “ACTION.
