ANXIOUS TO REPORT.
The lantern-jawed imported living
skeleton, who isthe son of his father
and is doing the small debts court for
. the Morning Mistake, is keeping up the
record of that sheet in making errors.
Unfortunately for the editor of the Rec-
orp he was dragged into that court and
settled a disputed account upon the
same conditions that he had offered to
settle it out of court. This young pro-
digy reported that all right, but went on
to state that we were the defendant in
another case where C. A. Baldwin was
plaintiff for the sum of £13.20. That
was a lie, out of whole cloth. Mr. Bald-
win and the proprietor of the Recorp
have never had any financial or other
kind of differences.
We were sued for $24.38 cents and
owed $11.65 which we paid as we o'lered
to do before suit was brought.
If indications count for anything,
some of these Monday mornings there
will be a trouble in the business office
ofthe Mistake which $11.65 will not
settle.

It is reported that the work of con-
struction of the Crow’s Nest pass rail-
way will be commenced simultaneously
froy four different centers in order to
speedily complete the work. The cent-
ers will be McLeod, Elk River,Kootenay
Lake and Nelson, and the cunstruction
will go east and west from these points
until connections are made and the line
is completed. There seems to be no
reason why 300 miles of road might not
be built within the next six months, if
stich energy is displayed. This line will

are no more relied upon, but a certain
and irresistible power slumbers in their
holds, the old thirty-two pounders
which Neleon fought with are obsolete,
but in their stead are shore-shakers and
ship destroyers,
yy the way, the ships which
were the admiration of the world ten
years when that display was
made, are themselves obsolete, not one
of them will be permitted in the royal
line this year. From that fact the world
will understand that the fleet they will
look at this year is of recent creation,
and if they look around the different
points where ships are under construc-
tion, they will see whv it is a natural
thing for that country t te the fore-

no conception, the greatness of
whom the world has as yet but

command her forces that are not and
never will be tamous for anything ex-
cept their capacity for lying and their
savagery, The contrast is the more
striking when we reflect that the Cubans
began without any organized body or
funds, or guns, or cannon—nothing but
the rude machetts—while Greece at the
beginning had a regular army of 25,000
men and a navy vastly superior to that
of the Turks, a regular-established gov-
ernment and all the machinery neces-
sary for making a strong defense, ex-
cept that she seemed to have but one
competent commander, and he was
given but a subordinate command,
where nothing that he coul! do could
counteract the mistakes and cowardice
of those above him. The conclusion is
irresistible that a brave army under

old foe to meet on the sea, sure enough.

PECULIAR ECONOMY.
Canadians on the Border Accused of
Mailing Letters in America.
The Toronto Star is informed by a
business concern, which enjoys a large
correspondence, that business houses in
towns along the Canadian border of the
United States are resorting to an ex-
pedient which saves them money in
postage, virtually defrauds the govern-
ment, and is altogether a mean sort of
economy.
Letters addressed to Canadian post-
offices are carried across the river to De-
troit or Buffalg and mailed there for two
cents instead of on the Canadian side at
three cents.
The practice is one to which business
men should not stoop. It is mean, and
it is anti-Canadian. There can be no
law or regulation to stop it, and the
only hope of discouraging the practice | and will soon be in running order. We

The history of the camp reads
like a fairy tale, and the fabulous
riches are scarcely excelled by
the imaginary “King Solomon’s

reputation for law and order, It
is supplied with waterworks and
electric lights. ‘The main street
is graded and ten blocks are built
up with two and three story busi-
ness houses.
