Wednesday, November 25, 1992 PREVIEW 3 Arts (LEISURE Fanning the Flames Aardvarks’ Stokley Seip douses flames to join The Ludwigs Neil Rachynski NEWS REPORTER There’s a musical metamorphosis occurring. . Stokely Seip, bass player forthe Flaming ‘8. Aardvarks, has left the band. The Winlaw musician had taken off with ’Varks to Vancouver, and almost as soon as he hit the street, Seip was scooped up by The Lud- wigs. The manic alternative group is enjoying some radio attention from Vancouver to Toronto. Seip said the change happened “while we were doing the Flaming Aardvark thing.” After founding member and singer Gerry Beaudry left the band in August, harmonica player Doni Dark took over as frontman. With an independent CD in hand, called Something Suspicious, the "Varks headed out to Vancouver. Ludwigs singer Eric Ludwig met Seip through a mutual friend — producer Ce- cil English, who is known for his work with DOA and Dayglo Abortions. The deal for Seip was done over a beer... or two? The Ludwigs had recently lost their bassist and English suggested Seip as a replacement. . “Within an hour I showed up, and they asked if I wanted to join, and I said ‘why not?” Seip said. “We've played a few gigs and it’s going really well,” Ludwig said. “Stokely en- hances the stability of the band, it’s more powerful.” Well enough, in fact, that material from their second album, Jdle and Unde- sirable, is seeing radio play on stations like CFOX and CFMI in Vancouver, and CFNY in Toronto. MuchMusic has already played the video for ‘Indecent at Joe’s Cafe’ on Much West, City Limits and the Power 30. Seip said he’s enjoying the Ludwigs’ follow- “It’s nice to play in front of large, responsive the audiences,” Seip said. The group recently performed a gig at Van- couver’s 86 Street club and will be appearing at the Town Pump. Eric Ludwig formed the group in 1989 after taking the Ludewigs out of Winnipeg and cre- ating the West Coast band. Speaking from Vancouver, Ludwig was laid- back, with a good sense of humor — a far cry from the near psychosis of his performance on their latest album. Ludwig said the group is set to release an- other two videos, one for ‘Coming Back’ which is in production, and an animated video for Lead vocalist Eric Ludwig plans to take his band The Ludwigs on a cross-Canada and European tour. We're taking it one step at a time.” Ludwig said the band has received sign- ing offers but they want to hold off for a while. “We're not ready to approach a label,” he said. “We don’t want to desperately sign with anyone that says they want to help. We want to keep control of things ourselves.” The Ludwigs will be heading into the stu- dio with producer English over Christmas, and could have a new album out as soon as January. In the meantime, Ludwig is content to perform live at night, and by day enjoy the Ludwigs display in the window of a&b sound. “There’s two windows, and one is Madon- na and the other is The Ludwigs,” he said. “Kind of like one icon going up and the other going down. We'll probably come out with a book of our own, too — ‘We Did Madonna.” As for the Flaming Aardvarks, Seip said Nelson founder Gerry Beaudry has kept the name. Doni Dark is in White Rock with a blues group called The Vomiteers. And drummer Ron Morrison is checking his options.
