The story of why Jim changed
Ais name is still a mystery to me
and to all of his friends, but what
iy Not a mystery ts that he and his
ister grew up in Northeastern
Alberta in a Ukrainian-Canadian
family. Their father was a highly
respected schoolteacher and prin
cipal of many prairie schools
along the Vegreville to the
Edmonton line. Their mother
went back to university at the age
of SI to become a teacher and
was herself highly respected in
her profession for some 20 years.

Because education was valucd
by the family and because their
father was both a poet and a
translator, many of the children
have gone on to write, Jim's
younger brother Oleh
Kupchenko, is an Albertan play
wright with many plays published
and performed to his credit. Our
local Kupchenko, Jim, has pub
lished many poems and several

stories to complement his novel

But the most prolific and success
ful of these family members has
been Gloria. And now she’s gone

Throughout much of her life
Gloria has lived in Toronto. In
her own right she was a success
ful model, but she devoted her
life to her husband's caree a
lawyer. With her husband Stan
Frolick, she was the center of
Toronto society, and together they
traveled the world. As a patron of
the arts, she was able to help
many ‘struggling artists. She rec
ognized early the talent of painter
William Kurelek and encouraged
him before he be ne famous for
A Prairie Boy's Summer. Then
when Stan Frolick was ill and
dying in the mid- 1980's, Gloria
took up writing, a career she'd
ulways wanted to pursue

In 1985 she completed a book
of short stories call The Green
Tomato Years. Published by
William Wallace Publishers,
these are stories about what it
was like to be Ukrainian and
growing up during the Depres
sion. As a picture of the times,

these stories are remarkable, Our
local writer, Jim Chapman, is a
character in several of the stories,
most notably in the story where
he and a friend find the bodies of
two. young lovers frozen into a
creekbed. e

But Gloria didn’t stop there. In
1988, in conjunction with two
Ukrainian friends of hers, she
collaborated in the publication of
a book of poetry, The Land of
Silent Sundays. In 1989, once
again William Wallace put out a
book of hers—a short novel
called The Chicken Man, a sensi-
tive portrait of an old man
remembering his past. Her efforts
began to gain the attention of
major Canadian publishers, so
when she published Anna Veryha
in 1982, MacMillan of Canada
was her publisher. Anne Veryha
is a delightful boek about one day
in the life of a nine year old child.
The audience for the book was to
be both young people and adults,
and Gloria Kupchenko was able
to use language in such a way as
to keep both groups interested

After this book was published,
Gloria traveled the country publi-
cizing it

I met Gloria Kupchenko twice
and was impressed by her vitality.
Here was a woman who was
filled with life, who had writing
projects outlined for years ahead,
and who encouraged others to do
things before it was too late. Last
year I talked to her on the phone
about possibly coming to Selkirk
College to read as part of its
Canada Writers’ Series. That
didn’t work out, but she told me
then about the two dozen writing
projects she had on the go.

And then, on November 25,
she died. We will never know
what masterpieces she could have
produced had she started writing
when she was younger. We will
never know what masterpieces
she might have produced had she
been given more time on this
earth of ours. We can only hope
that MacMillan will go ahead and
publish her children's book, so
we can have more of her, now
that she’s gone.

Learn to make jewelry from a master craftsman

In the third week of January,
Kootenay School of the Arts will
launch a 12-week course in basic
Jewelry technique, taught by Eric
Leyland

Now a Nelson resident, Eric
Leyland has been a goldsmith for
over 17 years. After mid 70's
studies at the Vancouver School of
Art and the Ontario College of
Art, Leyland studied in the jewel
ry program at George Brown Col
lege of Applied Arts in Toronto

He later earned a diploma at the
Gemological Institute of America,

and for some years he has been a
Fellow of the Gemological Asso-
ciation of Great Britain

Leyland operated his own jew-
elry design studio in Vancouver
for 14 years, and taught the Cana-
dian gemological diploma pro-
gram at Vancouver Community
College during some of those
years

More recently, he imparted his
knowledge through extended
courses at Arctic College, Iqaluit,
NWT. He has exhibited his work
in Canada, and has shown in Eng-

land as well. Some of his pieces
are examples of meticulous metal-
smith work that imaginatively
employ an intriguing variety of
materials.

Eric Leyland’s course will
stress fundamental metal-working
techniques like sawing, filing,
shaping, soldering, and surface
ornamentation.

learn appropriate safety considera-
tions. The course will also provide
a slide lecture on the history of
jewelry.

divided into two groups, one
meeting on Tuesday evenings

Nativity play and carols

There were few televisions,
and no videos or transistor
radios —so one did not have
time to become jaded. And if we
wanted baking and-fancy deco
rations, we made our own

Our family always made
chocolates, ordered gifts ffom
Simpsons and Eatons, and put
the extra ‘leaves’ in the dining
room table around which we
crammed as many relatives and
friends of all ages as possible

In the lull between Christmas
and New Years we played
Monopoly or Rummoli endless-
ly from morning until night,
never moving the games off the
same table. My mother would
finally order us out into the
snow where we built forts and
snowmen and poured sugar
syrup on clean snow and ate it

Then we would go back into
the basement for cocoa and
goodies, (after stripping off the
soaked clothes and mitts) fol
lowed by supper and another
round of the current game
When bedtime came we would
snuggle into bed with the latest
Nancy Drew book, drifting off
to sleep while grownups talked
and laughed around the table

1 cup shortening or margarine
1 1/2 cups brown sugar

2 eggs

2 tsp. vanilla

2 cups flour

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

2 cups rice krispies

2 cups rolled oats

1 cup coconut

1 cup raisins or chocolate chips

1. Beat shortening and sugar till smooth

2. Add slightly beaten eggs and vanilla - mix

3. In separate bow] mix flour, baking soda, baking
powder, and salt

4. Gradually add to the egg mixture

5. Stir in rice krispies, rolled oats, coconut, and raisins or
chocolate chips

6. Shape into balls and press with fork.

7. Bake at 375 F for 10 minutes.

NOTE: If dough is too dry and crumbly, add 1 tbsp
milk, then shape into balls.

Fruit Slice

Temp: 350 F
Baking Time: 45 ~ SO minutes
Crust

1 1/3 cups flour

1 tbsp. white sugar

3/4 cup butter

1. Combine flour and sugar. Cut in butter (as for pie
crust)

2. Press firmly into bottom of lightly greased pan

3. Bake at 250 F for 20 minutes

Filling

1 cup brown sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

| cup shredded coconut

2/3 cup walnuts chopped

1/4 cup glazed cherries, chopped into small pieces
3 tbsp. flour

1 tsp. baking powder

pinch of salt

1. Beat eggs, gradually adding sugar and vanilla.

2. Sift flour, baking powder and salt and add to sugar
mixture.

3. Add remaining ingredients

4. Spread over crust and return to oven (lower temp to
300F).

5. Bake 25 - 30 minutes, until top is set and light brown.
6. When cool ice with favorite icing.

Bugle Party Mix

Temp: 350 F
Baking Time: 45 minutes

1 box “Bugles”

2 cups mixed nuts

2 egg whites

1 cup sugar

2 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. allspice

1 tsp. ginger

2 tbsp. condensed orange juice (frozen)

1. Beat egg whites and sugar together.

2. Add spices and orange juice and mix well

3. Pour over Bugles and nuts and mix well.

4. Bake at 350 F on cookie sheet for 45 minutes.

Caramel Corn

3 quarts popped com
1/2 cup honey

1/2 cup butter

| cup slivered almonds
1 cup raw cashews

| cup sunflower seeds

NOTE: You may use any nuts preferred or none at all

1. Heat butter and honey until melted.

2. Pour over popcom and nuts

3. Spread on cookie sheet ( not too thick)

4. Bake at 350F for 10 minutes or until lightly browned
NOTE: Do
