The meet is known throughout the district for the great time the swimmers have hanging around with each other, as well as the chance for the swimmers parents to meet each other socially, And there's no better place to do this than the Colville meet, The pool is right next door to a large wooded park where many of the swimmer’s and their fami- lies spend the weekend camping. A special permit is given to the Colville club to allow over 200 families to camp there. A Robson River Otter parent put it best “The emphasis is on fun There's serious competition, but everyone has a really good time," said Reg Shingler. And despite the fact the kids get to meet and play with other kids from all over the region, don't let that fool you about who's having all of the fun. “The parents enjoy it every bit On the blocks - Bronze medalist Chris Cook gets ready to take the plunge LIQUIDATION Factory to you prices displayed in every vehicle Vest Drive One No Commission Sales! And Shingler had a load of compliments for the hospitality of the club, and the park. “The hospitality is amazing, we just love it," he said. "The park is just incredible." The Aquanauts will be return- ing the hospitality this weekend. “We have our meet this week- end, and the kids are really excit- ed,” said Aquanauts coach Wendy Pilla. There's a big pasta dinner on Friday night, and a big barbecue Saturday evening. And many of the swimmers, and rumour has it coaches, will be wearing special costumes for the meet. But, before I forget, thete was swimming at the Colville meet CASTLEGAR AQUANAUTS The Aquanauts took second place at the meet, just over 350 points behind the first place Colville team. Pilla said that was no mean task, since they only had half the number of swimmers Colville had. "We have a very strong team - the quantity and the quality." Pool Cues MAKE COMING . "They're so busy having fun, they can't get nervous about swimming.” The team has moved into their hard-training phase, and the swimmers are putting in a lot of metres in the pool. She said that the three swim teams from outside the region who attended the Colville meet made the competition a little stiffer for the team. For instance, Paul Shingler came in fourth in the 50 free, with two Kelowna swimmers ahead of him. “That's a lot of points.” she said. As well, an increase in disqualifi- cations due to strange mistakes by the swimmers hurt the team. The team is.also in hard-train- ing phase, so big time improve- ments are not to be expected. The course itself, one of the best in the province, also helps to attract the sports-world figures. “It's a great course, there's no doubt.” An old team mate of Young's, John Blair has been at every tour- ney, and Steve Tambellini spreads the word to his fellow Canucks. “We're very fortunate that John McKeachie [from BCTV sports] has been emcee since the beginning.” Young said organizers Stosh Uchida, Alec Birukow, Pat Metge, and Karl Henne are the ones who make sure that the tour- ney runs smoothly. “The committee's been togeth- er since the beginning, an they're a great help.” The tournament began the year after Young left his job as general manager of the Sandman here in town five years ago. He had been invotved with the Red Cross while manager, and opened up one of the rooms at the inn as a storage room for the society. It was a place for them to store crutches and wheelchairs that would be lent to Castlegar resi- dents in need of assistance. The tourney has to date raised over $50,000 for the Red Cross, and Young said that the figure for this year could top $20,000, depending on the Calcutta and hole sponsors. He added that the tourney couldn't happen without the Major sponsors, Air BC, Celgar, Labbat's, and the Sandman. “They've been there since the beginning, and without those four there would be no tourney.” Spectators are welcome and autograph hounds are welcome The best time to get celebrity sig- natures is during registration, between 10 and 11 a.m Silver Rattle Antiques 301-11 Ave. Castlegar (in Tulips Building) 365-5191 Dirty thirty tourney te tomorrow i Julian Harrison.
