Doran's had gone from 10 per cent. of the Northern Ontario market in 1971 when it was sold for $8.4 million to ° four, per cent under Carlings. By 1977 Carlings’s wanted out and was looking for a buyer. ‘And that's when people like Ross Eaket in accounting and Gordon Woods and others on the plant floor got the idea to buy the brewery and its four plants for $3.75 million and make a go ot if. They made it. 4 Now called Northern Br the company had sales of $19.5 million in fiscal 1981. It had 180 employees in September, 1977, when it was bought. Today it employs 200 bie breweries in Sudbury, Timmings, Thunder Bay and the Sault. ‘Talking about moving into the U.S. to compete with Moosehead’ RECORD-SETTING MONTH June was a record-setting month: for the company’s eight brands and Eaket, who is now company president, ‘ts talking about selling more of his beer in Southern Ontario and maybe moving into the U.S. like Mooschead, a successful feisty brew from the Martimes. The com pany is talking to several U.S. distributors, Eaket says. Woods's 1,000 shares in the company: were worth $1 each in 1977. They were worth $23 each in the last fiseal year and Woods says they will likely be worth $30 at the: end of the current year. : It's all because of the improved Productivity one gets at a company that’s entirely employee-owned, says Eaket. And of course local loyalty helps too. “We've got a lot of salesmen out there,” says Eaket, who worked at Doran's 21 years. “And of course the feedback helps too. When something’s wrong we hear about it.” Up here they drink things like Northern 55 and Superior in the Sault or Kakabeka and Silver Spray in Thunder Bay, all Northern Breweries products. “Carling’s never appreciated our beer,” says Woods, who sank his life savings — $1,000 in stock and $19,000 in’ debentures — in the company in 1977. “They purchased us and ran us into the gound.” THEY STILL TALK He's not the only one to say that in this steel town on .\ the south shore of Lake Superior. They still talk about how they think Carlings wanted their beer to slip so that the national brands would prosper and how Doran's wor! were demoralized at the end. tear Even though Carlings was a good i call for SEATTLE (AP) — The + defence rested Tuesday in the Chinatown massacre trial of Benjamin Ng, after it had asked for a mistrial because a juror’s family had received a threatening phone call Mon- day night. King County Superior Court Judge Frank Howard denied the mistrial motion after. both the in- dividual juror, Raymond White, and other. jury members whether the call would affect their consider- ation of the case. They indicated it, would not. Few details were available but defence lawyer, John Hnery Brown said. the call, taken by a member ‘of the juror’s family, included “racist terminology.” ” The defence did not call mistrial murder are Willie Mak, 22, and Tony Ng, 26, no relation. Nak's trial is to follow Benjamin Ng’s. Tony Ng re- mains at large. Browne read to jurors testimoney from. Michael Nolan, a criminalist at the Washington State Patrol crime lab, indicating no blood was found on Benjamin Ng’s clothes after the slayings. The defence contends Ng bound and robbed the patrons of the Wah Mee club, but shot na one. Nolan found two brown spots on one of Mak’s tennis shoes which reacted positive- ly to tests for blood, Browne said. A friend of both Mak and Benjamin Ng was present at a restaurant discussion Mak talked about robbing a Chi club and Ng, 20, an immi; from Hong Kong, to testify on his own behalf before resting about 11 a.m. The said it killing all the witnesses. REVIVED DRAUGHT.” ' H Adding to the company’s fortunes is a revived draught beer market. : t Northern which was a monopoly in draught beer in this part of the province, saw its keg sales slipping so it intro- duced the beer ball in November, 1980. i That's a plastic ball of draught. It holds the equivalent to 56 340-millilitre bottles and retails .for. $29_plus tax. Bryan Ch: Northern's ‘ ers says the beer ball is a strong seller and hs become a fixture at Picnics and other outings in the North... .. ., How aid they. do it? i ‘Adding to the company's fortunes is the revived draught market’ In the éarly years, the company survived largely on its soft drink which has fi with Pepsi Cole, Canada Dry, 7-up, Crush and Hires, Today, the split betwen beer ‘and soft drinks is’ about 50-60. says Eaket. . > Although the/company is private, 80 per cent of the employees own shares in it. Under the charter, employees S, are eligible to buy’ shares after they have worked \at paying good money, the workers felt the Doran’s label was ing neglected, Eaket says. It’s the pride of the North again. In:1981, the company won two gold medals from the Monde Selection Institute of Brussels for another two of its products — Northern Extra Light beer and a sp blended, Ucoholic b rs called Europa. Last year it won gold medals ir Brussels for Northern Extra Light and Northern Ale. Europa took a silver. 5 Northern Ale and Extra Light are big sellers in Southern Ontario, where the company’s products are sold in Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville and Oshawa. Superior and Edelbrau are also sold in the south. One observer not attached to the company who thinks Northern could be sitting on a gold mine is Ross Shoniker, a brewing industry consultant in Toronto. He says Northern could be as heavyweight in the south two years. The capital base of the company is roughly divided three ways among hourly unionized employees, salaried help and management. EACH HAS TWO The board of directors is divided much the same way with each of the three groups having two nominees. In addition, there are two directors from outside. The workers put down $1.5 million and the rest was paid off in notes. Eaket, secretary-treasurer of Doran's at the time of the sale, says the share structure was built in units of $1,000. Of the $1,000: $50 was for a share, the remaining $950 note. 4 “So the employee was paid monthly on his note with interest and he just took that note and the shares to the bank or credit union and borrowed that money from them,” he says. if the company can crack open an i scheme. Extra light has been a particularly good seller in the south because it has only 2.6 per cent alcohol and 70 calories. “In the he gets his interest every month which he turns over to the bank. What we were doing was using the borrowing power of 130 people. x wasa LOTO 649 draw numbers The six regular winning numbers in the Loto 6/49 draw Saturday were 9, 12, 20, 21, 37 and 43.
