The fact a Fox show, but not one from the three networks, was selec ted says something about the changing face of television The 1989-90 networks schedule is cautious, conservative and com: fortable, according to. the report More shows than ever have been “Fenewed, there are fewer programs that might be considered troublesome and a heavy reliance ‘on stars and programs that have worked well inthe past But the annual preview by Saat chi and Saatchi Advertising gives ABC’s Chicken Soup, starring Jackie Mason, a nine ona scale of 10. Other highly rated network shows are: NBC’s Nutt House, CBS’ The Famous Teddy Z and ABC’s Family Matters, all eights. The Saatchi “Dramatic shifts in the business of television itself: competition from independents, cable and VCRs" and wonders if the ** television can continue to support big events — from miniseries to the Olympics.” Booker, a spinoff from Fox's 21 Jump Street, stars Richard Grieco as private investigator Dennis Booker. Approximately 1,500 fans filled the Castlegar and District Community Complex by the time warm-up act Grapes of Wrath finished. It was Cochrane's band the crowd came to see and they weren’t disap- pointed as the show kicked off with Ashes to Diamonds, a cut off the band’s 1986 self-titled album. The concert moved into second gear as the group followed with one of their first big hits, White Hot Cochrane’s attempts to pace the show with some guitar work on the heels of Untouchable One were lost in the hollow acoustics of the complex. So the band shifted into third gear with a trio of entertaining tunes. Good Times, the group's newest hit, started off the spree, followed by a rousing rendition of yet another of the band’s gold work, Human Race, and capped by some excellent guitar work on Can’t Turn Back Cochrane saved his biggest recent hit for the end of the show and Big League drew the anticipated response Boy Inside the Man rounded out the evening and set the mood for an encore which started out with promise but en: ded too late. After a slight wait the band ap- peared on the stage one by one and broke into the classic Summertime Blues. They reached back into their hits bag and pulled out Lunatic Fringe and kept the crowd jumping long enough to throw in a fading rendition of Citizen Cain before heading back into the depths of backstage for good Although ticket sales fizzled slightly on the last day, promoters of the con. cert said it was a financial success. Meanwhile Tom Cochrane and Red Rider headed towards Vancouver for their next gig, as warm-up band for Rod Stewart's stop at B.C. Place. role involves corpse Bernie seem alive to his many friends and party guests McCarthy admitted he had qualms about playing opposite a stiff (actually actor Terry Kiser). “I laughed when I read the script,”” he said, ‘but | also thought, ‘This can morbid.’ But somehow it all seemed so harmless to me “You find yourself laughing in spite of yourself. I saw the picture and I did my usual cringing (about his perfor mance). Then I found myself laughing, it’s sodisarming.”* McCarthy observed that Kiser “didn’t have any lines to learn, he just lay there and got all the laughs.”” But Kiser did get tossed around, and he suffered a few broken ribs that sidelined him for a while. Weekend at Bernie's marks a depar ture for McCarthy “It was so refreshing for me because I'm used to playing a nice, be very sensitive, moral guy who does the right thing,”” he commented. **That can be a little boring, in real life as well as movies. ““L thought Larry (his character) is a terrific guy because he thought he was very savvy and worldly and witty, and the babes loved him. Of course he’s wrong about everything. Underneath it all he’s like a scared little kid. But he puts on a wonderful performance for the world. He’s selfish in a lot of things, but he couldn’ thurta fly.” EASY TRANSITION McCarthy's early film career saw him appear as a teenager in such films as Class, Heaven Help Us and Pretty in Pink even when he was in his 20s Now 26, he minimizes the matter of the transition to adulthood “That's one of those questions that other people seem to be concerned about,” he said. “*I played teenagers because | was a teenager. | played 20. year-olds because I was 20.
