(AP) — Jacquelyn Burkart has a womb for rent. “Healthy woman wants to carry pregnancy for infertile couple,” says an advertise- ment placed in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer by the 27- year-old mother of two. “My priority is the money,” Burkart said. “I need money to get through school. I have easy pregnan- cies and deliveries, so I de- cided it would be a fairly easy way to make money.” Four couples have res- ponded to her ad. But by the appearance of their hand- written letters, Burkart doubts the couples can afford her price — $15,000 plus medical and legal costs. “The going rate is closer to $5,000 to $10,000, bit I don’t feel it's worth my time for that,” she said. “It would be nice to haveas ‘much as I'ean, » of course.” Married at 17, Burkart separated from her husband shortly after the birth of her first child, Heidi, now nine. After her divorce, she de- cided she wanted another child, so she performed arti- ficial insemination on herself, using sperm donated by. a friend. The result, after one attempt, was Jeffrey, now two. Burkart, who lives with two other women, works part time and is a full-time Port- land State University stu- someone aservice. And if you believe that cottage cheese is everywhere and everyone is eating it, you're almost right. There has been an increase in the amount of cottage cheese produced in Canada, and there is a trend to mere of the two-per-cent variety. “The rush for cottage cheese .starts in January, levels off and picks up again in May with bathing-suit weather just around the cor- ner,” said Vince Kishimoto, manager of marketing ser- vices for Nordica Cottage Cheese. . Eating cottage cheese has always been identified with being health-conscious and Kishimoto said the growing number of people looking for low-calorie, nutritious food is one reason for the increase in production. A study done for Nordica shows that more women than men like cottage cheese. cheese calorie and most of them eat it right out of the carton. EASY TO Cottage cheese is the sim- plest kind of fresh cheese. It is made by heating slightly sour milk until the curd sep- arates. The curd is then cut and drajned and often blended with fresh cream. Reconstituted dried ‘skim milk or non-fat dry milk solids are used to make com- mercial cottage cheese. Lac- tic acid is added to hasten the separation of,th ecurd. “We make cottage cheese in different texiures,” said Kishimoto, “because some prefer the meatiness of the large curd while others like creamy cottage cheese with a very small curd.” Arlene Gryfe, home econ. omist with Dominion Stores, said cottage cheese is a good source of protein. Put it through the blender for a creamy dressing or serve it with vegetables as a salad and with fruit as dessert. “One cup of cottage cheese provides one-fifth of an adult's daily requirement of mb for abortion counselor, said she has discussed her rent-a- womb plan with her daugh- ter. “Her first reaction was, ‘Oh, good. If it's a girl we can keep it and give Jeffrey away." Burkart said she is waiting for one more suitable family to come forward before de- ciding who will receive her services. She selected two lawyers and a doctor to help her, and talked to the district attor- ney's office in Portland to make sure what she plans to do is legal. She intends to sign a contract with the people whose child she .will bear. MUST PAY COSTS “If for some reason I mis- carry, they still have to pay me a percentage and cover the medical costs. Burkart said she is pre- pared to give up the baby. “I love being pregnant, and it’s probably going to be difficult for me when it comes to saying goodbye to it. But when I know that they love the baby and will give it a gocd home, that will make me feel better.” Winning Provincial number The Sept. 25 Provincial winning ticket number is 3345018.
