trial city on China’s southeast
coast comparable in size to
Pittsburgh, was the unlikely set-
ting for the final dives in the
1980 United States Riving sea-
son.

Though a trip to the People’s

"Republic of China was not on

the original 1980 schedule, a
group of American divers—the
1980 U.S. Olympic Diving

* Team—visited five cities in

China for competitions and
exhibitions ‘in late August and
early September.

The 16-member delegation
spent two weeks inside China,
combining diving activities with
opportunities to see ‘the Great
‘Wall of China, the Forbidden
City in Peking, and other major
aftractions.

Strikes It Right!

RENO, Nev,—Pam Buck-
ner, 34, has an affinity for bowl-

ing lanes, She got married on ~

the lanes two years ago and last
August she threw 30 consecu-
tive strikes during a Women's
Professional Bowling Associa-
tion toumament in Detroit. Her
game scores in the run were
237, 300, 300, 280. ~

She used an Ebonite Magnum
7, a rubber ball which is called a
**soft bowling ball’’ in the
sport. The rubber surface pro-
vides traction on the alley, giv-
ing better control, the manufac-
turer said.

For the purists at heart,
Buckner said the synthetic rub-
ber surface on the ball was Phil-
prene 1506 from Phillips Chem-
ical Company, with the ball
made by Ebonite Corp. in Hop-
kinsville, Ky. ;

After her phenomenal string,
Buckner immediately called her
boss at the Grand Lanes in Reno
where she works, and her hus-
band and her mother. As for the

wedding, Buckner said **It was:

pression of a gardener's skills

Any planting that covers the
ground in hard-to-get-at places
is a ground cover. Ground cov-
ers can accent existing trees and
shrubs, tying them all together
in a flowing visual design.

Planning a ground cover can
be a fun experience since it calls
upon the best creative skills of a
gardener.

Look at your outdoor space
with a fresh perspective. Where
are the gaps? What are the small
eyesores? For instance, note the
ugly brown areas where the
grass refuses to grow under the
shade tree.

Before planting a ground
cover under a large leafy tree,
remember that selective prun-
ing will let some of that needed
light through. Ortho’s book
“All About Pruning” can pro-
vide helpful hints and tech-
niques that do not require
expensive professional help.

Choose a site and select a
ground cover that offers a good
sbalance and fits your grand de-
sign. Prepare the soil well.

Organic material, such as
peat moss, should be mixed on
the surface to Ict in air. Two
inches should be spread over.the
surface, then mixed 6 inches
deep. For larger areas, add the
mulch only to the soil near the
plant.

All-purpose fertilizers help
ensure the initial success of a
ground cover. According to
QOrtho’s book **All About
Ground Covers," fertilizer with
a 5-10-10 formula for nitrogen,
phosphorus and potassium is
best. A 5-pound bag should be
sufficient for an area of 100
