Hy asa motor betel ehain and has. grown-rapidly to include . international hotels in two jor cities in Western Can- ada. The first Sandman Inn, built in 1966, was a 35-unit motor inn located in Smit- hers. Since those first days the chain has been expanded to a total of 22 properties throug- hout B.C., Alberta and Sas- katchewan, including new hotels in Regina, Lethbridge, and Penticton. Sandman's continued ex pansion within the hospital- ity industry is assured with m2 Sanbman INNS the 1984 opening of the Castlegar property. Located at the intersection of Highway 22 and 3, Castle- gar is the centre of an imaginary wheel which incor- porates Nelson, Salmo, Trail and Grand Forks. The city is also advant- ageously sited mid-way bet- ween Vancouver and Cal- gary, and is served by the only jet-class airport in the region, utilized by PWA to provide scheduled service between Castlegar,..Calgary, and Vancouver. " These combined geograp- hical and transportational pluses add up to make Castlegar the ideal location for business, industry and vacational potential. In Vancouver there are two Sandman properties, each with over 200 rooms and all services as required by today's travelling public. Sandman is particularly proud of its 11-storey hotel situated adjacent to B.C. Place Stadium on West Ge- orgia Street. » This 300 room hotel, as well as offering first class in sugh areas as rooms, dining and lounge facilities, can aleo offer a health club featuring handball, racquetball, swim- ming and a fully equipped gym. FIELDWORK . . . Workers attend stock at Georama Growers nursery at Taghum. Nursery has last 14 years to include 16,000 square feet in hedted Georama “Growing for the Kooten- ays... growing with the Kootenays” is the motto of Georama Growers — who produce quality pot plants, cut. flowers, or al Today Georama has 16,000 square feet of heated green- houses, 2,000 square feet of greenhouse space and four acres of containerized nursery stock. growing — in 1983 4,500 pots were produced. One-hundred-and-fifty pot- mums were produced in 1969, compared to 1,000 pots in De ber 1983, with a win trees, shad trees, shrub- beries, and fruit trees for the Kootenay region. “We have been servicing the Kootenays for 14 years now,” say ownersGeorge and Anna Grypma. “And we welcome new and old customers to visit us soon and. inspect our large selec- tion of nursery stock, bed- ding plants, and hanging baskets.” Also available from Geo- rama Growers are a complete bark mulch, and landscaping rock. Georama started in 1969 with one heated greenhouse — and three-quarters of an sere of cultured land. Back ® opera tion is among the most mod- eran and up-to-date in B.C., and the biggest in the Koot- enay region. Their main crops now con- sistof flowering potted plants on’a year-round basis, and tropical plants and cut flow- ers are also grown year- bined experience of 36 years in the field. Seasonal staff is employed from early spring to late fall. Georama attributes its rapid growth over the last 14 years to the staff's know- ledge of new products, keep- ing up with market trends, and a i dating of then the Pp bedding plants, field-grown perennials, and vegetable plants in the spring, and their operations. An example of Georama’s growth is their increase in their pointsettia crops. In 1970 250 pots were produced ter average of 500 per month. All Georama’s crops have increased at the same rate, and many new varieties have been added over the years. At the outset, many of Georama’s customers were mainly in the Nelson/Castle- gar area. Now Georama sup- plies steady customers in Nelson, Castlegar, Trail Grand Forks, Nakusp, Cres- ton, and Kaslo with their products — locally produced in their greenhouses. “This did not happen ac- cidentally or by luck,” say George and Anna Grypma. “Most of our customers used to buy only when they ran short, or suppliers from else- where could not fill the de- mands. “Most all were impressed with the quality and fresh- ness of our potted plants and cut -flowers,-and the -in- ‘creased shelf life in the store, and placed standard orders for year-round supply.” They add that this alone wouldn't have been enough to meet growing competition from outside the Kootenay region. Georama’s other ad- vantages include the staff's knowledge of the local mar- ket, (ie. products, favorites, changing demands, new styles of bouquets, wedding flowers etc.) keeping up with trends, and trying out new. varieties through their retail outlet in Nelson, anéd-the flower shops and garden cen- tres they supply. Another advantage is that they are centrally located in the Kootenays, making ship- ping distances short. Their products can be shipped in only four hours to outermost reaches of the area. Georama runs a weekly delivery truck to Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, and Grand Forks. George and Anna Grypma of Georama Growers hope 1984 is and outstanding year for all of their customers, and look forward to seeing them at their hurseries. _, . that's what we're here for: 270 Col We will be happy to arrange a meeting with you to determine which of the following services will serve you best: © Bookkeeping Services Financial Consultation Income Tax Planning Corporate & Personal Income Tax Returns Audit Services BRIAN L.
