No, she’s not heading out vowing never to return. Instead, she’s packing up and making the move to Medicine Hat, Alta. to attend col- lege on a basketball scholarship. The recent Stanley Humphries grad left town Thursday for Medicine Hat College in the Gas City, and she has done her home- work on her new school’s team, the Rattlers. “They play really close to the way the Rockettes played,” she said. “The coach is really into full-court press and man-to-man defence.” And since that’s the kind of game father and coach Jack instilled in her and the rest of the Rockettes last year, Closkey doesn’t think the transition will be a problem. “I think it will be really easy,” she said. And so does Rattlers coach Cheryl Kryluk. Reached Thursday at the college, Kryluk said she doesn’t think Closkey will have any trouble making the step up to college hoop. “She likes to run, and that’s what we like to do,” she said. “She’s really aggressive and we like to play an aggressive game.” Playing in the Alberta College Athletic Association, Kryluk said the Rattlers usually end up in the middle of the nine-team conference, one that features colleges from places like Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge. But with the infusion of players like Closkey, Kryluk said things look good for the Rattlers to see some post-season action. “I would say that we'll finish in the playoffs, that we'll be one of the top four (teams),” she said. “I think with the recruiting we've done, that’s what we'll do.” Back in Castlegar, Closkey said Kryluk has had her working out to prepare for the upcoming hoop season. “She’s been helping with pre-season training over the summer,” she said, adding that has included putting to weights to use. And with less than two weeks to go before her first appearance on the Rattlers court, Closkey she’s counting the days. “My first practice is on the seventh of September,” she said. “I think Tm ready to go play. The Trail Flag Football League will kick off another season to- morrow and the league finds itself operating with three less teams than it did at the start of the 1991 season. League president Ken Lankin said although the TFFL is down to four teams for 1992, the quality of play won't suffer. “The four teams left have been the top four teams every year,” he said. “They just take turns in first.” Left to fight it out will be the Trail Bulldogs, Trail Hawks, Slo- can Innmates and last year’s champion Castlegar Kats. Lankin said flag football isn’t just a sport for the younger gener- ation, as the age range in the league goes from 19 to 43, and it doesn’t have to stop there. “If there are any guys older in shape who want to play, that’s cool,” he said. All four teams see action at Tadanac Field in Trail tomorrow, and anyone interested in joining the league can call Lankin at 365- 2730. Need acar loan? We'll make it hay
