Atkins dropped his quarter into the Joust game and put up a valiant battle for 37'/ hours, but the 13-year-old wore out before the machine did. “The fatigue finally settled in and he just couldn't take it,” said Steve Hardy, assistant manager of the Toronto arcade. Atkins plans another assault on the Guinness Book of World Records and is back in training. COUNT DESMOND, who bills himelf as the world’s champion sword swallower, says it's the Suicide Show part of his act that sometimes causes problems. That's the part where he invites a stranger from the audience to plunge a sword down his throat. Appearing in Edmonton after recuperating from an injury caused when an over-zealous stranger plunged the sword into his lung, Desmond says: “I love swallowing swords. I've been swallowing things since I was a small kid.” He swallows his microphone during the act — but it doesn’t have sharp edges. He's been in hospital 20 times with « major injuries suffered during the Suicide Show. In most cases, the blade has punctured the esophagus, the tube between the mouth and the stomach. The count says he’s “careful about who I choose” — presumably he avoids hecklers. HER FIGURE notwithstanding, Dolly Parton eats like a sparrow. It's true — after all, would her caterer lie? Kenny Caravetta is cook and head waiter to the stars who come to Vancouver. His company provides the pre- and pgst-show food, cooked and served to order. Caravetta got Parton's order early and it was simplicity itself: a selection of fresh fruit and cheese washed down with diet soft drinks. “T've had my wife on that diet for two weeks, but it isn't working,” says Caravetta, a businessman who not only knows all the angles, but the curves, too. SPEAKING OF CURVES, about the only flaw Playboy can't airbrush off its centrefolds has been those pesky staples. But that's gonna change, boys. Nat Lehrman, president of Playboy's publishing division, says the magazine will be found by glue starting later this year. The new process will make the magazine look more like a book and will offer many production advantages. But how will the centrefold be displayed? What about easy removal for decorating the garage, workshop or barracks? That won't be decided for awhile, Lehrman says. “It will come out very easily: Not easier than staples, but I'm not worried about it. Remember — there won't be any holes. “It's going to be better now, though maybe a little raggedy at the top.” ‘A Playboy centrefold with a raggedy top? Unthink- able! SINGER MICHAEL JACKSON'S sister says he regularly calls friends in the entertainment business and has a once-a-week chat with Katharine Hepburn. LaToya Jackson says in the February issue of McCall's Magazine that Jackson's other regular phone friends are Jane Fonda, Quincy Jones and Shields. ACTOR CLAYTON MOORE, who portrayed the Lone Ranger on television in the 1950s and in public appearances, can give up his green-tinted sunglasses and put on his mask again. “I can't think of a better way to start the new year,” said Moore, 70, after he regained the right to wear the movie crusader’s trademark black mask, taken from him by court order in 1979. Moore said that a 1979 restraining order restricting him from wearing the eye mask at public appearances had been dropped. The Wrather Corp., which owns the rights to the character, had won the order. Director lost his garbage Srreet 77 TALK CASTLEGAR people keep popping up in all sorts of publications. Shannon Bell was featured on the front page of the Jan. 4 Vancouver Sun. The photograph showed her sleeping on her luggage while waiting for a flight out of Vancouver International Airport. Why was she waiting? Her flight to Hawaii was delayed because of fog. We thought that only happened at Castlegar Airport. BELL WASN'T the only Castlegar resident to appear in print recently. The Crosfield family appears in the lavish book of photographs, A Day In The Life of Canada. New York photographer Andy Levin stayed with the Crosfields while he photographed the area last summer. One of his shots which appears in the book is a two-page color photo of Shannon and sister Sarah Crosfield in the bathroom getting ready for school. The other photograph is a black and white picture of Ted Crosfield having his shoulders massaged by Dolores Aberdeen. He does management work with small cgmpanies plus venture equity financing with his lawyer and a commercial broker friend. Al says amazing how many worth worthwhile small companies have reached the stage where there are no funds left. “They started with little or no money, made a sound contribution, and then either bankruptcy or major cutbacks.” Al says he has about 14 financial presentations on the World's Fair. And they seem in such a hurry. Even their press releases have “for immediate release” stamped on them. ‘The envelopes in which the releases ‘are sent also carry the same sense of urgency. Only thing was that the release date was Dec. 20, 1984 — nearly a month ago. Some rush job! WE'VE ALL HEARD those stories about people who win big in a lottery, quit their jobs, blow all their money in six months, and end up in a dingy saloon somewhere crying in their beer. Well, according to the Western Canada Lottery Foundation, this is a myth that deserves to be classified with babies found under cabbage leafs, and the fortune telling properties of a tea dregs. The vast majority of western Canadians who win “major” lotteries (over $5,000) are “prudent, practical and pleased” with how the windfalls have affected their lives, says the Western Canada Lottery. Based on 650 responses to an on-going 1984 survey, 15 per cent of winners invest their money, and almost 50 per cent share their prize with family or charities. Only three per cent quit their jobs as a result of their prize, and an “overwhelming” opal per cent said they weren't app! for r4 most had received publicity in Tocal news media. Said one millionaire winner: “Winning is a positive experience with no problems attached. I have been treated well by everyone.” A $10,000 winner said, “I've been kissed 500 times!” according to the release. TRAIL CHAMBER of Commerce has an interesting contest in swing. (AP) — The universe is not 20 billion years old, as many scientists believe, but a comparatively youthful 12 billion years, two astronomers said Tuesday. That means the universe is also smaller than previously supposed, with the most dis- OURS 30-5:30 9:30-9:00 tant observable objects being 12 billion light-years away rather than 20 billion, said Mare Aaronson of the Uni- versity of Arizona. A light-year, ‘the distance light travels in a year, is about 10 trillion kilometres. Aaronson said he and his principal collaborator, Jer emy Mould of the California Institute of Technology, made their new determi tions by detecting and taki: into account the movement of the cluster of galaxies to which our solar system be- longs.
