Provincial Goal
Is Prevention
Of Milfoil

A two-part program to
prevent the spread of Eura-
sian water milfoil has been
announced by K. Rafe Mair,
minister of environment.

A quarantine project to
prevent boaters from spread-
ing the weed to uncontamin-
ated areas will be located at
roadside stations on the north
and south ends of the Okana-
gan Lake system. Two other
stations will be set up at the
Horseshoe Bay and Tsawwas-
sen ferry terminals.

The Water Investigations
Branch has also implemented
a prevention program, where
three teams of investigators
check uncontaminated lakes
in the province to curb the
advancement of the weed.

Lakes to be examined
periodically in the Thompson-
Columbia region. are: Shus-
wap, Little Shuswap, Mara,
Mabel, Sugar, Nicola and
Pennask. Those lakes to be
checked ‘in the Kootenay
Boundary region are: Koote-
nay, Christina, Windamere,
and Arrow Lakes.

In motorcyclists jargon,
the title means the right way
to do something — in this
case, how to ride a dirt bike
without ‘evoking a declaration
of war’ from the public.

The book urges riders to
form clubs and establish strict
rules of conduct for their
members and ‘lay down the
law’ with irresponsible riders
who violate their code of good
behavior.

Among the suggested
rules: obey No Trespassing
signs; slow to a walk passing
hikers; stop and turn off
engine if horse-bdck riders are
passing; never ride near res-
idential areas or camp-
grounds; don't race in public
areas; never operate an un-
licensed, uninsured motor-
eycle on a public road or in
any public area; and never
operate a motorcycle without
an effective exhaust muffler.

An entire chapter is
devoted to mufflers, stating
‘noise is obnoxious’. The BC-
MF warns riders, “If we are to
survive we must keep quiet!”

Another chapter covers
environmental protection giv-
ing many rules designed to
minimize the motorcyclists’
impact on wilderness areas.
Using cartoons to keep the
message light, the 20-page
book also covers safety, riding
techniques, maintenance tips
and legal obligations.

The B.C. Motorcycle Fed-
eration strongly endorses and
encourages the use of helmets
by all motorcyclists either on
or off-road. The federation
feels that the use of the
helmet is.the only means of
protecting the head area in
the event of an accident.

The BCMF is a non-profit
organization working with
government and other agen-
cies ag well as with motor-
cyclists, themselves, to prom-
ote motorcycling.
