Refreshments will follow the meeting prneeeees eerm: Westar Timber is investing $2.3 million in its Celgar Pulp Operations in a project designed to strengthen the mill's competitive position in world markets. The project involves the installation of a new pulp cleaning system. The original system, built when the pulp mill was constructed in 1960, has been made obsolete by dramatic changes in technology that have revolutionized the design of cleaning and screening systems. The 25-year-old system is now being replaced with state-of-the-art equipment. Work on the new system has already begun and will be spaced over the better part of the year. Completion is scheduled for the fall and the system is expected to be operating in early September. According to Wilf Sweeney, general manager of the mill, pulp produced at Celgar has traditionally been a high quality product. But changes in the way pulp is made and the customer's higher standards require increased efforts by manufacturers to improve quality. “The project is designed to do just that,” he says. ‘Our aim is to ensure that the mill maintains its excellent reputation in the world market at time when competition is fierce.” Sandy Fulton, president of Westar Timber, says the installation of the new system will have a very positive effect on the mill and also on the community of Castlegar. “We have a commitment to our employees and to the _ community of Castlegar,” he says. “Any improvements we can make to our product will help to give us an edge | against our competitors. “The better able we are to compete, the better the chances we have of operating continuously. This trans- lates into greater job security for our employees and a stable economy for the area.” Fulton noted that Canadian pulp producers are fighting for survival against heavy odds. Currency devaluations in the face of a strong U.S. dollar have put Canadian pulp producers at a disadvantage. Also, worldwide 10 new pulp mills have come on stream during the past year flooding the market with an additional two million tonnes of pulp. Record production levels at \existing mills have contributed to the oversupply. “These factors put great pressure on us to do everything we can to become more competitive,” says Fulton. “The $2.3 million being invested at Celgar Pulp is an investment in a more secure future because it will help the company maintain its position as one of the top quality pulp producers in the world.” The project coincides with Celgar Pulp's 25th anniversary celebration.
