Akselson was backed up by Gerry Wichert, Hank Schellenberg and Jim Moore. With Rust were Alf Henshaw, Frank Steenvoorden and Mike Kurnoff while Al Taranko, Dave Adshead and Zeke Clements were the winning elements who combined with Verzuh. Also at the meeting: * Bill Cook joined the club’s executive. © It was decided that a 10- game draw would be instituted next season to decide trophy Good seasons aren't enough for Canseco PHOENIX (AP) — Smiling smugly and arms raised, Jose Canseco turned to the crowd after his first home run of spring training mocking those who taunted him. If it is possible to. think of a player making a comeback from a 37-homer, 101-RBI season, Jose Canseco is that player, Coming back from injury and World Series ignominy and the breakup of his marriage, Canseco is his own man with his own set of priorities. His top priority is to please himself, to stay healthy, Play 150 to 155 games and put up some stats. He doesn’t much care if he pleases the rest of the Oakland Athletics or the fans. ‘ He won’t go for another 40-homer, 40-steal year, as he did in 1988. He'll try to baby his injured back by running less. But he doesn’t discount the possibility of 50 homers. “If I can get my at-bats, stay healthy, there’s no telling what I can do,”’ he boasted, surrounded by curious rookies in the A’s spring-training locker room. Five months ago, he was the slugger who disappeared while the Cincinnati Reds swept-Oaktand: He had one hit, a homer, in 12 at-bats, and didn’t start the final game. Oakland fans jeered him as much as they did the Reds. “People are always looking for an excuse, looking for a scapegoat, and I was the perfect scapegoat at the time,’’ he said. He skulked away from Oakland. His wife, Esther, made more noise, complaining about the treatment he got from the A’s. Now she’s giving him the treatment, trying to move his divorce suit from Florida to California, where the law calls for a split of assets. Unlike most players, who evoke sympathy, or at least understanding, when they play hurt, Canseco got little of either, Fans jeered him and teammates ignored him. Hardly anyone, including Canseco, talked about the pain he felt since June in his right leg from the bulging disk in his lower back. “It was like a razor going down the side of the leg and it didn’t finally go away until three weeks before the start of spring training,"’ he said, The pain was almost constant in the second half of the season. In May, he hit .353 with 13 homers and 35 RBIs in 27 games. In June, he lay in traction during a 15-day spell on the disabled list. In his first 24 games after the all-star break, he hit -344 with 12 homers and 28 RBIs. The rest of the season, as the pain increased, he hit only three more homers and drove in 19 runs in 45 games as he changed his batting stance to put less strain on his back. Through it all, he made only one error. He finished third in the American League in homers behind Detroit’s Cecil Fielder (51) and the A’s Mark McGwire (39), and fourth in RBIs in 131 games. His batting average sagged to .274. Spine specialists offered—Canseco” different approaches to solving his disk problem, some advocating surgery, others the more conservative met he chose, Two and a half months of rest and endltss hours of physical therapy and exercise made the pain go away. He knows the disk still can rupture at any time. He swings the bat perhaps faster and harder than anyone in baseball, putting more torque on his back and threatening further damage to the disk. “I’m going to try to baby my back,”’ Canseco said. 've got to pace inyself this year. Maybe not try to stretch a double into a triple, maybe not dive at balls. I'm sure there’s going to be times when I'll be out, where I’m going to DH here and there, and that helps in the longevity sense.’’ winners. It had p ly been a three- or four-game draw. © Off-season recruiting of new members was encouraged. © Curling clinics will be offered at the beginning of next season for beginners or any seniors who want to participate. © Those who helped out with and played in the club this year were thanked. She extended a further invitation to the Arts and Crafts Festival to be held at the Lake Side Park in Nelson on June 29 and 30. Music "91 and Chatauqua celebrations are being held in conjunction with this festival and it is expected that 10,000 to 15,000 visitors will be in attendance. The second speaker of tlie evening was Maite (pronounced mighty) Bilbao of Tenque Lauquen, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The pretty and ever-smiling Rotary exchange student used maps and slides to tell a char- med audience of her life and ac- tivities in her homeland. At the end of the meeting, she talked about various Argentinian artifacts that she had set up earlier on a display table. She explained the uses of such exotic devices as the bolo, a device used by the gauchos (cowboys) to catch cattle in the Argentine. Exchange students Jin- tana (Ling), Knotmit of Betong, Thailand and Megumi Hirosi, newly arrived from Bihoro, Hokkaido, Japan, joined Bilbao at the display table. The evening’s program included more than a dozen speakers who recalled special memories of Bristow, some of them funny and many quite tender. Among the speakers were Gwilym and Eileen Hughes, who could not be in attendance, but refused to be left out, so sent their message via video.
