on North American's Eastern seaboard if the world’s largest
tidal power project is ever built across the upper reaches of
the Bay of Fundy.

Whether it would be an ecological disaster, a nuisance
or a boon is uncertain.

The idea of using the power of the tides to generate
electricity to light lamps and fry eggs from here through
New England has long been a pet enthusiasm of the Nova
Scotia government. About six years ago it set up the Tidal
Power Corp. to plan the project.

Low oil prices have pushed the dream to a back burner,
but the Crown corporation has a foothold. Since 1984, an
experimental tidal plant at the mouth of the Annapolis River
has been sending enough electricity into the Nova Scotia
power grid to supply a small town.

The Annapolis pilot plant is small but its single turbine
is identical to each of the 128 turbines the company would
like to install across the Minas Basin at the inner end of
Fundy to capture the energy of the world’s highest tides. In
the Minas Basin, the difference between low and high tide is
12 to 15 metres.

CREATE BARRIERS

The full-scale project would create a chain of barrages
— barriers forming a dam — and turbines about eight
kilometres long. With its cost estimated at $7 billion i 1984,
it would be among the world’s largest construction projects.

Like any hydro-electric plant, it would create no air
pollution or radiation. But scientists believe it would change
sea levels all the way from Truro, N.S., to Cape Code, Mass.,
and could threaten migratory fish, particularly shad
