Wednesday, June 23, 1993 Lung Association offers asthma camp Submitted A British Columbia Lung Association asthma camp Offers asthmat ic children 9-13 years old a chance to have fun this summer and learn more about how to manage their condition, It runs from August 12-21 at Camp Luther at Hatzic Lake, Mission. The week-long camp in the Fraser Valley provides a full range of activities such as swimming, canoeing, hiking, arts and crafts, and children will be taught how to manage their asthma. The campers will be supervised by doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacologists, physiotherapists and recreation staff Each child will receive individual attention to his or her emotional and physical needs and nutritionists will provide special diets for those with food allergies. “Sometimes children with asthma feel left out, having breathing problems that can restrict them from playing the same sports as their friends, and having to take medications. The Lung Association's asthma camp gives children a chance to have a normal camping experience, made for fun and learning, despite their disease,” says Kelly Ablog-Morrant, the B.C.°Lung Association's director of Health Education and Program Services. For registration forms, call Kelly Ablog-Mérrant at 731-4961 or outside the Lower Mainland, to L-800-665-LUNG. The cost of the camp is $200.00 per child, and space is limited to 60 children Submitted Tarry's Elementary’ School recently held their annual Public Speaking Contest, in which stu- dents from grade 2-6 participated in. Dorothy Barke 1: 365-2271 TO KNOW CHRIST AND TO MAKE HIM KNOWN Do you believe in God? Many people claim to believe, but their belief seems to make very little difference in their life. Oh, they may acknowledge God occassionaly and call out to God in emergencies, but beyond that there is little attempt to make contact, or receive direction! True belief in God is more than a vague agreement that there must be a God out there somewhere that got our universé going in the dark distant past! It is a firm conviction that God exists etérnally, presently, and can be know personally. It is trusting God's promises to forgive, to lead and guide and work through all who truly believe! The world believe really means "to live by" the apostle James went so far as to say “you’say you believe that there is orf God. Good! Even the demons believe that...and shudder believe there is a God James 2:19. He was warning people that it is not enough to we need to live in harmony with God and live by his truth! God's nature and will can be know in many ways. but there are three ways God speaks very clearly to mankind. One is through nature God in human form, & thirdly about knowing God and living by God's truth in every way possible (his handiwork) secondly through Christ through the word of God (Bible) therefore, anyone who is serious will be eager to allow God to speak to his or her life who was Could it be that people often prefer to tell God what to do for them, rather than approaching God with true worship and humility and asking "Lord. what would you have me to do?" (see acts 9:6 KJV) William Willimon, Dean of the chapel at Duke University says many people have come to think of God as...good friend, cheap therapist!" Even church people convey the thought..."Are you lonely, is there something missing in you life? Would you like peace. joy, love, happiness, good health, good sex, good times? Come to Jesus!" in other words...God what can you do for me! John Kennedy's famous words come to mind: "Ask not what your country can do for you...but what can I do for my country?" Let's be that serious and that practical in our relationship with Wednesday, June 23, 1993 The Castiegar Sun Ann Landers Syndicated Columnist after a long illness and was then crem woman was assured by the funeral director that everything would be taken care of and told she ‘shoulda’ worry about a thing A few days after the services, « cardboard box was delivered to ber home by messenger. A note ‘was taped 10 the box which mad, "REMAINS OF ‘ANN SMITH: TEMPORARY CONTAINER.” ‘The woman was shocked, as was her sister, who was visiting at the time. She phoned the funeral home and was told, “If you ate interested, you can buy an um from us for your mother’s remains.” I thought this was a crass and insensitive response and said so. While several of my readers agreed, lo and bebold, | received a barrage of letters from funeral directors all over the country lambast ing me for my “ignorance.” The following letter came from Missour Miss Landers: It is apparent that you are not aware that funerals are a business. We cannot make any money on cardboard boxes. In onder to make a reasonable profit for # crerfution, we must sell ums. You were very hard on that Ohio undertaker ‘who delivered Mother's remains in a cardboard box. The alternative would have been « plastic bag. ‘Would you have liked that better? That funeral director in Ohio was doing the proper thing. So why don't you stick to lovelorn problems and stay out of things you don't know any thing about? — Third-Generation Funeral Director From Myrtle Beach, $.C.: Apparently you assume that funeral directors are also mind “Upset Daughter” should have issued proper instruc tions for disposing of Mom's ashes before crema tion. Many people choose to spread the ashes in the family garden or sprinkle them in a favorite lake. Can you imagine bow bent out of shape the daughter would have been if Mom had arrived in a $1,500 alabaster box to be displayed on the mantle? SAS. Pinckneyville, 111.:1 am not connected with the funeral industry, but I've had some experience with disposing of relatives who have died. If people do not make their wishes known in advance, they must go along with whatever decisions are made by the professionals. I do not favor asbes placed in an uro. ‘The burden is too great to keep the urn dusted and hed It is also a constant reminder of death. One might as well have a grave right in the middle of the living room. And mantelpiece ums usually end up in the basement. Better the ashes be sprinkled over a garden where birds sing and flowers grow. ~ D.L Eagle Point, Ore: I live in a small town that has National Veterans Cemetery. I work in the post office where we see a lot of those cardboard boxes come in for burial at the cemetery. Most of the boxes are not very sturdy nor aré they well Sealed.
