Prizes of $50 each went to Mike Barrin- . ger of Fine Line for best solo performance on the flute and saxophone; Darryl McGee of both Steel and Fine Line for best drummer; Gerry Miller of Travel Tunes for bass; Mike McMann of Steel for best rhythm; and for best vocalist, Chris Catalano of Travel Tunes. I have always contended that just as “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, so, too, is “good music in the ear of the listener." ‘I would not have thrilled to the idea of judging the participants! however, hav- ing been given this opportunity to cover the Battle of the Bands, I must confess ‘that despite my intention to remain totally unbiased, I did have expectations as to who I thought should have placed in the top three. i My selections would have been: Shadowfax, a profes sional group from Vancouver who recently played at the Devil's Den Cabaret; in second place a local Castlegar group, Nightwing, which, 1 was most disappointed to learn, was not given any formal recognition by the judges. If intuition serves me correctly, I think we'll be hearing more from them in the future.
