When people have been away from school for a few years, they can expect a period of adjustment while lectures and labs, reading and writing and books and calculators become part of a new routine. “True enough, college was strange for awhile and I was strange to student life,” said 4 recent Nursing graduate. “The most difficult adjustment for me has been juggling the demands of home and parenthood and all with the demands of school. Fortunately, my family was understanding and helpful.” One noticeable trend has been a gradual “easing-in." Marg Nickle department head of Selkirk College's Allied Health (Nursing) program often encourages the mature student to take time, if possible, to get back into the routine of school. “It has been our (Nursing department) experience that a preparatory year or more has been a great asset in allowing time for adjustment to the formal learning enyironment,” said Nickle. “A preparatory year allows students an opportunity to pick up the necessary prerequisites as well as courses from the program in advance, which means a lighter load when the student registers in the nursing program.” For the prospective student who worries about the academic demands of college, Selkirk College does offer preparatory courses in English, mathematics and the sciences, Reading and study skills courses are also available and a useful pre-entry activity Other Selkirk College services that may provide you with some useful information include financial aid services and counselling services with career exploration sessions for individual students and groups. By introducing some planning to the process you can reduce some of the “heartbreak” associated with applying for admission. You will be required to complete a series of steps before an admissigns decision can be made. Below are a few easy guidelines. You are responsible for completing the steps on time. To ensure you get off on the right foot, you should start early. An early application will let the admissions office know you are serious about being considered by the institution and give you time to sort out any problems that may arise. Applying early will also let you find out sooner if \:you have been admitted and give you more time to consider your options. You should familiarize yourself with the deadlines of the ..,eollege’s. appii¢ation..process.. Some institutions have a “general” application deadline in addition to deadlines for specifie programs or courses. This information can usually be found in the college calendar, or obtained directly from the admission office. Don't panic if you miss a deadline. Call the admissions office and let them know that you are still planning to apply. Each institution possesses different application pro- cedures. Follow their instructions and complete the application form in detail. Complete and sign the application form and return it to the Admissions Office. 3. Applicants under 18 years of age must submit an official record -of school marks-or-an- official copy of a secondary school graduation certificate. Mature students (18 years and over) are encouraged to provide official school records and official transcripts of previous work, as these documents may be required to prove that college course prerequisites have been met. 4. Send all required supporting documents and materials to the Admissions Office. Do not mail application materials to a department or technology program area. FINANCIAL AID CAN HELP How to pay for college Being a college student costs money ... . that’s no secret. And it’s certainly no secret that it is becoming more and more difficult to earn your year’s keep in the four months or less that you can work each summer. So now you're probably wondering where you are going to get the money to pay for your educational investment. If you haven't earned enough money during the summer to support yourself during the academic year, then you should plan to examine what financial aid resources are available to you. Start with the B.C. Student Assistance Program (BCSAP). The program includes the Canada Student Loan and the provincial grant and is in place to assist students whose resources are insufficient to provide for the cost of full-time studies at the post-secondary level. Some eligibility requirements do exist. A student must be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant, a resident of . a registered full-time student (currently a 60 per cent course load) and be able to show financial need. Apply early for financial aid so that you'll know where you stand before school begins. At Selkirk College we encourage students to submit applications for assistance to the college by June 30 prior to the September they plan to enrol at the college. Applications take about eight weeks to process. — Students should not wait to be accepted by an institution before applying. However, application proce. dures may vary from institution to institution. Students are advised to check with the institution they plan to attend for details about the process. In addition to applying for financial assistance, Selkirk College encourages students to check out scholarships, bursaries and awards source of aid. Students should find out what assistance is available to them as Selkirk College students and investigate other university and college calendars for scholarships, bursaries and awards open to all students studying in British Columbia. When planning a budget for an academic year students should consider, tuition fees, books and supplies, local transportation, accommodation, travel to and from their home if relocating to attend Selkirk College, and miscellan- $ous items. Costs may run at about $4,500 to $5,500 per academic year. Single students living at home require less money and should plan on spending about $1,700 per academic year. Many of the college's offerings include some hands-on, real life components. In sdnie of the programs, students gain practical experience in specialized training settings on college campuses, others learn to apply theoretical information to practical situations in the field. For example, students in the Nursing program spend many hours in clinical settings in area hospitals and Forestry students spend two weeks in the field conducting projects in cable yarding, engineering and juvenile spacing. Other Forestry courses such as silviculture, surveying and forest management also require field experience. The Ski Resort Operations and Management program takes students to ski resorts during the winter months. At situations and find out first hand, what it is like to work in the ski industry. The Environmental Sciences program (geography, geology and biology) incorporates field experience in the local area directly into the courses so that students have the opportunity to become more familiar with the local region.
