The origin of this special day on the Christian calendar goes back to the time of Christ’s earthly ministry. Palm Sun- day refers to the events that took place at Jerusalem just one week before Christ tose in triumph from his grave. On that eventful Sunday, huge crowds of Jewish pilgrims had gathered at Jerusalem to celebrate one of their most important festivals, the Passover. The focus of this event was upon the deliverance their an- cestors experienced as slaves in Egypt when God’s death angel struck down the first-born in every Egyptian home, but spared the home of every Israelite family that had sacrificed a lamb and had marked the door-posts of their house with the blood of that lamb. . True to his promise, God caused ~ his. death angel to pass over the homes of all who had obeyed his command, and so it was that this event marked a great deliverance that was faithfully observed down through the centuries of time. At the time of Christ’s earthly ministry, the Jewish nation was un- der the domination of the Roman empire. Many times, throughout the centuries of Jewish history, God’s Promise of a deliverer (messiah) had been proclaimed by godly prophets such as Isaiah. (See Isaiah 9:6-7 and Isaiah 42:1-9) Because of their disobedience, the Jews often suffered at the hands of surrounding nations, and rather than truly repent, they in- creasingly pinned their hopes on an earthly messiah (king) who would set them free from their physical enemies and proceed to make them the ruling nation on earth. Instead of seeing their messiah as one who would set them free from sin and » evil, and cause them to be a light to the surrounding nations, they looked for a messiah who would enable them to become the greatest nation on earth. It is understandable then, that as they i seized the opportunity to show their desire for him to become their king. In John’s Gospel chapter 12:12-13 we read: ‘‘The great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was on his’way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches, and went out to meet him, shouting hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord. Blessed is the king of Israel!”’ Was Jesus the The Messiah? Yes, he was, but not in the way they were expecting. Christ's concept of deliverance was much larger than set- ting one small nation free from its physical oppressors. He saw the whole human race in need of deliverance from the power of sin and death. Christ came to do battle with Satan and all the forces of evil. He had come to pay a sufficient ran- som so that any trusting soul could be set free from the power of sin and death. To provide that ransom price would involve a horrible death on a Roman cross. Christ knew that nothing short of his death could atone for mankind’s sin and bring about forgiveness and peace. Though he was fully aware of the suffering involved, he knew that death could not hold him in his grave. (see John 10:18) He knew his death would pay the sin penalty for any person who would trust in him. He also knew his resurrection from death would make possible the removal of death’s sting for every true believer. You can experience this wonderful deliverance and assurance by placing your faith in Christ and his sacrifice for you. Romans 6:23 says it clearly: “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.’’ TEA SET, wheelbarrow, loveseat, color TV, lawnmower, stecking stools, Xmas decorations, canning jars, 365-2416. 3/23 4 215x15°’ SUMMER radials, $100, one CB350 Honda motor- cycle, $350. 365-3692. 3/23 1 YR.
