6- Trail Times-Friday, May 21, 1982 RECREAT wil Harry p._ The Rossland Labatts soccer team had their unbeaten string stopped on Sunday, after a good 2-0 win over Nelson on Saturday at Jubilee Park. The local boys came out flat against Femie United and took a 4-2 loss. Talking to Joe Hughes on Tuesday, he said the possible reason for the let-down was that everyone was really hyped up to beat Nelson on Saturday and they probably considered Femie easy. Yet Femie proved that they will be a factor in the league this Mosquitoes, Pee Wee 1 and 2 andBantam. According to Merv, all teams are well staffed with coach, manager and parental help. Games are being played on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and games with outside teams will be encouraged. The enrolment has risen from 135 to more than 200 and the nights chosen are to avoid clashing with the newlyformed softball league for kids in the same age bracket. That softball league is season. being promoted by Scoring for Labatts on Rossland's play-for-funners. Sunday were Gerry Gallo The kids will be starting at and Tim Evans. Gallo and 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Mat McCarthy are new to the team this season, along with Roberto Cesseretti, who plays goal. The club has added two young local players in the persons of Pierre Habicht and Murray Walters. Pierre is the son of John Habicht, one of the former Labatt players and past president of minor soccer. John was probably one of the most popular players to don a Labatt uniform and his interst in the game carried on way beyond that. He was a referee, coach and a general push behind any soccer activity. Murray Walters will be remembered as one of the more exciting young hockey players to come up with the Warriors for some time. I haven't seen him on the soccer field yet, but from what I hear, he knows what he's doing. --- Rossland' s Minor Soccer is really looking forward to a great season, I talked at length with newly-elected president Merv Olson and he is real high on the prospect of a big season for our youngsters. There are 13 teams, mixed boys and girls, ranging in age from 6-14 in , Thursdays at Cook Avenue Park and Centennial with players from the adult leagues in charge. There is going to be lots of coaches available from outfield to batting and pitching for the older boys and girls. The rules will be well stressed but for the wee 'uns a little more leeway will be allowed. One has to hand a lot of credit to Rossland's Fun league for promoting this sort of thing. These guys are certainly a great bunch of fellows to look beyond their own pleasure to lift up the kids in this manner. From the fun league executive comes word that the fun tournament has been dropped. The cost is a factor so they dropped it. Any details on the kids league can be obtained by calling Jim Ling or other executive members of the play-for-fun league. I was unable to get any details on winners at the Retirees day at the Upper Course but Russ Broughton informs me there were 36 out for the regular weekly bash on Tuesday. If my leg keeps improving maybe I'll make it 37 next week. Doug Buhr, last year's coach, has decided to take on the manager's job with the Warriors next year. He will bring a lot of know-how to the position.
