There now seems no doubt but that the Crow's Nest Pass railway will be constructed this year and thut the C.P.R. will build it. There is only one man:in all Can- ada-who belittles the scheme and throws:cold water upon it-and that man‘is Ri W. This section provides that an agreement of this kind may be given in settlement of a breach or trust, and state iii'the D who is reported to’ have said that Catia should not concern itself about a road for the Kootenay mining district, as there are only about 25,000 peopie whom it would serve and only 5,000 of those are Canadii the inder being Americans: who are piling up wealth at Canada’s‘expense. Could anything be more ridiculous in the eyes of those who know the facts concerning the Kootenays? Se In now looks as though war in the East-is inevitable. The united powers of Eurepe have commanded Greece to withdraw from Crete, but Greece refuses toobey and is mo- Dilizing its army instead. The! Greecian populace is crying out for war. The stand that Greece has ‘taken is identical with that as-: sumed by Carthage when Rome‘ gave her a choice between peace: and war, and Carthage’s reply was: “QGive us which you will,” and: Rome.gave war. It remains to be seen whether the powers will say to Greece .“‘we give you war.” The fight for the office of mayor of Rossland has narrowed down to two candidates, C. O. Up tillthe time this point was raised, he had been strongly for the defence, but now he was just as firmly convinced the prosecution bad made good their contention, and he, therefore, decided in favor of the the plaintiff. It is of some interest to note that the agreement on which the case turned, and which was found to hold good, as above, was drawn up by A, J. McColl, Q.C., now Mr. Justice McColl. —~——_. BOUNDARY CREEK, Seme’ Interesting: Mining News From Greenwood Camp. On the Jewel mineral claim, in Long Lake camp, the shaft is now down over 70 feet, and the vein 1s fairly well mineralized, After sinking 50 feet the vein became almost barren, but was distinctly shown, and easy to follow, and now at a greater depth the mineral is coming in well, and the indications are that within a few feet the cre will again be rich. The shifts are now working. An engine and boiler is now being put in position for hoisting pur- poses. This claim and the Denero Grande are under bond to the pros- pecting syndicate of British Columbia, appears by the way their petiti are being signed that the town is about equally divided. What Turned Defeat Into Victory—A Section That Was Not Repealed. The New Westminster Columbian gives the following account, of a case which hinged on a very fine point: Ar- gument.in the case of Major vs, Mc- Craney was concluded yesterday after- noon, sad His Lordship Chief Justice Davie gave judgment in favor of the plaintiff. The case excited consider- able local interest, both from the par- ties to the suit being «0 well-known, and on account of ite somewhat sensa- tional character. In 1894 H. P. Mc- Craney, as manager of Mejor and Pearaon’s office in Vancouver, was ar- rested on a chargé of fraudulently ap- propriating trust prorsit; to his own use, the amount ipvolved being about $19,000. He was given a preliminary hearing in the District court, and Captain Pittendright sent him up for trial at the fall assizes. Pending the trial, McCraney’s friends came to the rescue, and entered into a bond or in the camp. The group belongs to J. C. Haas and James P.
